The Alexander Hamilton Society launches at UA

The University’s chapter of The Alexander Hamilton Society, or HamSoc for short, was launched last month, with the purpose of engaging students in “crucial discussions on foreign policy and national security.” HamSoc is non-partisan, not-for-profit and welcomes students regardless of major to join.

Luke Mintz is a senior majoring in political science, former vice chair of the UA College Republicans and president of HamSoc. He was interested in starting a chapter after he was approached by a friend who had ties to the organization’s national advisors.

Mintz said HamSoc’s goal is to “help undergraduate students get connected professionally and also learn more about American foreign policy through Alexander Hamilton’s perspective.”

HamSoc’s vice president is Eleanor Vest, a sophomore majoring in political science and art history. She said she hopes students from all colleges and majors will be interested in joining the society.

“From the get-go, it’s been a pretty serious and strategic process of how can we best institute The Alexander Hamilton Society and its national values here at The University of Alabama in a way that works for University of Alabama students,” she said.

Sam McKinney, a senior political science and economics major and is president of the UA College Democrats. McKinney is the treasurer of HamSoc and one of its founding members and he said the group will discuss important political, economic and social issues.

“The role of the U.S. military and foreign policy has been a major discussion over the last couple of years, especially since the 2024 election,” McKinney said. “It’s been really neat to put something on to help foster that kind of conversation on campus.”

HamSoc will host its inaugural event on Thursday, April 9 at 6 p.m. with speaker retired Maj. Gen. Vincent “Vinny” Boles.

Vest said Boles will be asked questions about his experience working at the Pentagon and the relationship between the American military and U.S. foreign policy.

“It doesn’t matter what you want to do, who you are or what you’re studying — we would love to see you there if you’re interested at all in American foreign policy or if you’re just interested in hearing a former Major General who worked in logistics at the Pentagon speak,” Mintz said.
