Ryne Nelson delivered his best start of the young season, and the Arizona Diamondbacks held onto a big early lead in Wednesday’s 7-2 win over the New York Mets in Queens.
The D-backs evened the series after a walk-off loss in the 10th inning on Tuesday and returned to .500 at 6-6.
Arizona rallied for five runs in the first two innings, and the Mets never got within four runs despite the D-backs committing two (should be three) errors on the infield.
Corbin Carroll was the offensive standout for Arizona once again, hitting two doubles and a triple with 2 RBIs in his 500th career game.
With the win, Arizona snapped New York’s four-game winning streak.

Nelson had trouble over his first two starts with walks and home runs, as he allowed four long balls, all with his four-seam fastball.
He had no such issues on Wednesday.
Nelson rode his heater (76%, most of the season) to 5.2 innings and one earned run, striking out five hitters with no walks or home runs.
The right-hander dominated the Mets over his first five shutout innings with only two singles allowed.
The Mets started to rally in the sixth with three singles to plate a run. Nelson struck out Mark Vientos for the second out before manager Torey Lovullo motioned to the bullpen, and Ryan Thompson finished the inning.
Nelson used his fastball to finish off all five of his strikeouts, and he drew eight whiffs with the pitch.
Corbin Carroll, Diamondbacks rally early
Corbin Carroll — in his 500th career game — got the Diamondbacks’ lineup started in a very productive first two innings.
Carroll doubled, reached third on a Geraldo Perdomo bunt single and scored on a Gabriel Moreno sacrifice fly.
The D-backs started the second inning with two singles, a sacrifice bunt and a walk to set up the top of the order. Ketel Marte singled home a run, Carroll doubled in another pair and Perdomo hit a sac fly to take a 5-0 lead.

The Diamondbacks have not homered since Jordan Lawlar went yard last Thursday, having to build innings and hit with runners in scoring position. That worked out on Sunday against Atlanta but the D-backs scored in one of 10 innings played on Tuesday.
Wednesday was more in line with how this team envisions its offense to succeed, by generating traffic on the bases. The D-backs finished with 11 hits and four walks while five batters drove in a run.
Arizona did not add to its lead until the eighth inning when Jorge Barrosa drove a two-run double to center field.
The sore spots were Gabriel Moreno (0-for-4, three strikeouts) and Nolan Arenado (0-for-5, two strikeouts and a double play).
Corbin Carroll moving up triples leaderboard
Carroll hit a triple in the seventh inning, his 46th as a member of the Diamondbacks. That is tied for second in franchise history with former outfielder David Peralta. Stephen Drew sits atop the leaderboard with 52, which Carroll should have little problem reaching this season.
Carroll already has three triples this year, which leads the major leagues. He led MLB in three-baggers in 2024 and 2025.
The last Diamondbacks player with two doubles and a triple in a single game was Jake Lamb back in 2017.

Series finale features WBC pitching rematch
The third game in Queens will feature the same pitching matchup as the World Baseball Classic finale, with Eduardo Rodriguez (Venezuela) going for Arizona and Nolan McLean (United States) for New York.
Rodriguez blanked the U.S. through 4.1 innings, while the rookie McLean went 4.2 innings and two earned runs.
The two arms are off to great starts this season. Rodriguez has thrown 12 innings without an earned run, while McLean owns a 2.61 ERA through his first two outings.
