Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 Liverpool Stats: Toothless Reds Suffer First-Leg Defeat to Dominant PSG

Liverpool hardly laid a glove on a dominant Paris Saint-Germain as the French club gave themselves a two-goal lead to take into next week’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg at Anfield.

Paris Saint-Germain put one foot in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League with a dominant display over Liverpool at Parc des Princes on Wednesday night.Goals from forwards Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia sealed a 2-0 win, meaning they head to Anfield next week with a two-goal cushion. Liverpool’s only consolation is that it should have been a much bigger deficit.

PSG controlled the game from the off, with Liverpool continuing their run of poor form which has now seen them win just two of their last eight competitive games and lose each of their last three.

It took just 11 minutes for the reigning champions to open the scoring in this tie. Precocious talent Doué was given too much space to turn inside the box before he unleashed a curling strike, which deflected off Ryan Gravenberch’s outstretched leg and over Giorgi Mamardashvili into the net.

It was the 20-year-old’s fifth goal in the Champions League this season, equalling his record from 2024-25. Overall, it was his 10th goal in the UCL, making him the sixth-youngest player to reach that landmark in the competition (20 years, 309 days old).

After miserable defeats to Brighton and Manchester City in their previous two games, a trip to Paris to face PSG was hardly welcome. But Liverpool looked out of their depth at times, with their first-half performance well below those seen from the Reds in the Champions League in recent years.

Arne Slot’s side failed to record a single shot in the first half of a match for the first time since April 2021 versus Real Madrid, while not since December 2007 (63 versus Marseille) had they completed fewer passes before half-time (82) in a Premier League or Champions League game. Shockingly, those 82 successful passes by their entire team were just 17 more than PSG conductor Vitinha (65).

Despite being outclassed for the majority of the first half, one consolation could be that it was still only 1-0 away from home in the first leg against the title holders… until it wasn’t 20 minutes into the second half.

Fleet-footed Kvaratskhelia weaved his way past a Gravenberch challenge before rounding Mamardashvili and cooling passing into the goal from close range to double PSG’s advantage and score for a fourth successive Champions League appearance running.

With that, he became the first player to find the net in four consecutive Champions League knockout stage games within a single campaign since Karim Benzema in 2021-22 (5).

That goal perfectly displayed the control that PSG had over Liverpool in the game, ending a move of 27 passes – the fourth longest before a goal in the UCL this season.

Luis Enrique’s side should have put the tie beyond doubt in the final stages, with Ousmane Dembélé hitting the post and Nuno Mendes missing another chance to score after failing to control the ball in front of goal.

Liverpool, who welcomed Alexander Isak back after a four-month layoff with his late substitute appearance, didn’t attempt a single shot on target in the game. It was the first time they haven’t had one in a Champions League match since November 2020 versus Atalanta.

They’ve overcome bigger deficits to comeback in the second leg of a UCL knockout tie in the past, but based on tonight’s evidence, that feels extremely unlikely.
