The long-standing headache and frustration parents face during Chicago Park District summer day camp registration each year may soon dissipate as the organization says improvement and “reforms” are coming.
“As Chicago’s leading provider of summer camps, we are committed to ensuring our highly sought-after summer programs are both exceptional and equitably accessible to every family we serve,” Chicago Park District General Superintendent and CEO Carlos Ramirez-Rosa said in a press release. “Because we take our role as a trusted resource seriously, this year the Park District will begin the first phase of improvements to the registration system to make the process easier, user-friendly and more intuitive for families that rely on these programs.”
The registration process, which typically occurs in April, is often competitive and crowded, with many camps filling up minutes after the system opens. It’s one of the most affordable summer programs for families, CPD said, with nearly 20,000 children vying for spots at an average cost of $8.34 per day.
“With rising costs elsewhere, these camps are an increasingly popular resource for families; driving up the demand for these essential programs,” the release said.
The park district said it will conduct a “comprehensive evaluation” of its camp program and registration system, the release said, starting with the process for 2026. CPD CEO and Superintendent Carlos Ramirez-Rosa said the upcoming improvements for the “first phase” include a new map-based search showing available camp and backup slots, clearer instructions and a revamped registration page.
The process will also identify camps in “high demand” that are likely to sell out.
“In addition to re-evaluating the camp sign-up process to better meet local demand, our staff is assessing capacity at park sites to determine the feasibility of expanded day camp availability citywide,” the release said.
The improvements are expected to be unveiled at public webinars April 14, by CPD, with families encouraged to attend and ask questions. April 13, the summer park schedule will go live.
“This is only the beginning,” the op-ed said. “Our team is already working on the next phase for summer 2027, with the goal of building a system that better serves families. We still have work to do, and Chicago families are right to expect a registration system that is simpler, fairer and easier to navigate.”
Summer camp registration for 2026 opens for online registration April 20 and 21, the CPD website said, with in-person registration starting April 25.
