What Will It Cost to Trade for Dexter Lawrence?

I’m not ready to start obsessively following Dexter Lawrence rumors. But the three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle’s trade request is something worth monitoring, especially since it comes as the New York Giants get the ball rolling on their offseason training program.

While speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Giants Head Coach John Harbaugh came off as optimistic when talking about Lawrence’s future with the team.

“We’ll find out,” Harbaugh said, via SNY (h/t Pro Football Talk). “I think the prospects are going to be high because we want Dexter here, I believe Dexter wants to be here. That’s a good formula, but there’s business involved.”

On the surface, it sounds like Harbaugh is confident that the Giants will work things out to keep Dexter Lawrence in the fold. However, that “but there’s business involved” caveat is one I can’t ignore. That quick quip is the kind of thing that makes me think there is some doubt in the head coach’s mind about Lawrence’s return. With that in mind, it feels like it would be wise to dig into the potential cost of doing business when it comes to a possible trade.

The potential cost of trading for Dexter Lawrence

Connor Hughes, who covers the Jets, Giants, and the NFL for SNY, hears that there is no consensus when it comes to Dexter Lawrence’s value. And for what it’s worth, I can understand why. Lawrence has been a dominant interior defensive lineman, but the drop-off in production in 2025 is concerning. Throw in the need for a new contract, which Hughes estimates (via Twitter/X) could cost $35 million per year, and complicates matters for all parties.

As for the potential cost of doing business, this is what Hughes has heard:

A late 2026 first-round pick (hey, the Bears have one of those!) A 2027 first-round pick (which, as of right now, the Bears still own) A second and fifth-round pick (Chicago has two second-rounders, but does not have a fifth)

Dexter Lawrence is a good trade fit for the Chicago Bears. He plays a position the team needs to fill, has performed at a high level recently, and the forecasted trade cost doesn’t seem all too prohibitive. A rotation of defensive tackles featuring Grady Jarrett, Gervon Dexter Sr., Shemar Turner, Kentavius Street, and Neville Gallimore would look a lot better with Lawrence sitting atop the depth chart. However, I do have questions about how the team would fit a new contract for Lawrence into its cap situation.

2026 NFL MOCK DRAFT HAS BEARS TAKING A STUD DEFENSIVE TACKLE

While the team projects to have $61.354 million in cap space in 2027 and a league-leading $287.987 million in room in 2028, the fact that the Bears have just $243,078 in cap space right now sticks out like a sore thumb. If Chicago were to pull off a Lawrence trade, its cap crunchers would be in for quite the workout to get the team in a place of cap compliance.

In the end, I find myself torn when it comes to the idea of the Bears swinging a Dexter Lawrence trade. The fit is obvious. And the cost doesn’t seem problematic. But there is a part of me that wonders if the team is better off trying to unearth the next stud defensive tackle in the upcoming NFL Draft. Chicago should be in a position to snag a top prospect, but there is a chance that the front office’s favorites are off the board by the time GM Ryan Poles goes on the clock. In any case, this is a situation worth keeping an eye on until further notice.
