ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Local lawmakers are speaking out after President Donald Trump said “A whole civilization will die tonight,” if Iran fails to meet his 8 p.m. deadline set in Washington.
What we know
Trump posted the threat on social media Tuesday, 12 hours ahead of his deadline for Iran to agree to a deal that includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz or face punishing strikes.
He also said Iran still has time to capitulate ahead of the deadline. Iran rejected a 45-day ceasefire proposal and said it wants a permanent end to the war.
On Monday, Trump said he is “not at all” concerned about committing possible war crimes as he again threatened to destroy Iranian infrastructure if Tehran does not meet his deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand
On X, Gillibrand said the following:
“Has President Trump lost his mind? Threatening to wipe out an entire civilization in a war the American people do not want is insane and makes us less safe. Hegseth should be fired immediately. History is watching.”
Rep. Joe Morelle
Morelle posted to X. He posted a screenshot of Trump’s post and said the following:
“I am disgusted with a U.S. president threatening to commit heinous war crimes against the people of Iran. This is not moral leadership. Donald Trump continues to dishonor the American people and trample on basic decency on the world stage.”
Sen. Chuck Schumer
Schumer also posted a screenshot of Trump’s post on X. Schumer said the following in his post:
“This is an extremely sick person. Each Republican who refuses to join us in voting against this wanton war of choice owns every consequence of whatever the hell this is.”
