Kelly Clarkson Reveals Strategy Behind The Voice All-Star Showdown Win — And the Singer She Feared Most (Exclusive)

Monday night was the first-ever The Voice All-Star Showdown with former winners and fan-favorite artists of coaches Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, and Adam Levine returning for a new competition.

Representing Team Adam was Javier Colón (Season 1 winner) and Jordan Smith (Season 9 winner); for Team Kelly, it was Jake Hoot (Season 17 winner) and Girl Named Tom (Season 21 winner); and for Team Legend, it was Maelyn Jarmon (Season 16 winner) and Renzo (Season 27).

Each artist performed a song that they previously sang on The Voice with the winners of each battle decided by OG coach CeeLo Green, who promised to call it like he saw it. The coach with the most wins got a terrific bonus. They would get to take two of their team members to the finale instead of one.

The first battle was Girl Named Tom vs Renzo, with Girl Name Tom named the champions. Then it was Maelyn Jarmon vs Jordan Smith with a surprise result: Maelyn won. And finally, it was Jake Hoot vs Javier Colón with Jake emerging victorious and giving Kelly the second victory she needed to become the winning coach.

“It was amazing to see Cee Lo Green be floored by these individuals that I knew what they're capable of, so it was really cool to have that extra win, to be able to bring somebody else to the table,” Kelly told Parade on a Zoom call with two other reporters. “I definitely rubbed it in the [other coaches] faces.”

The way it worked was that the first coach was announced and they revealed which one of their artists would be singing. Then the second coach got to pick which of their artists they best felt could go up against that artist.

“John and I were both worried about Jordan Smith,” Kelly admitted to Parade. “We were pretty worried about Jordan, but at the same time the thing I love about the people that have been on my teams in general, I choose a wide net.”

As for why Kelly chose Jake and Girl Named Tom as her competitors, she said, “Jake Hoot is so great at what he does. He's one of those people … when we got in rehearsal, I was like, ‘You need to just stand there flat-footed and sing that damn song, because he's got such a beautiful… George Strait’s one of my favorite singers of all time, one of my favorite artists that I grew up with.  It's one of those things: Understand the artist you are and be OK with that. He was competing against people that were doing different things and all the runs, and I was like, ‘Your best bet is to just be you. That's all you should do.’

“He even came back and sang ‘Desperado” even better, which I didn't think was possible. He's just such a great vocalist. He’s such a tall man that it's like this big sound coming out of him. He's been one of my favorites that has won. I knew I was going to bring back two of my winners, and I knew that Girl Named Tom had to be one, too, because that family harmony, in my opinion and I’m obviously biased, but I've heard other coaches say it, too, that they're the best group that's ever won on that show hands down.

“Their harmonies are incredible. It's a family thing. It's growing up around people that instinctively know what the others will do. It's just a level of commitment and discipline that not many groups have. They did ‘Dust in the Wind.’ It was even better if it could have been, and it made me tear up because I was so excited about them coming back.”

To date, Kelly has four wins to her name. Jake Hoot, Girl Named Tom, Brynn Cartelli and Chevel Shepherd.

“I'm super proud of them,” she says. “Not because they won. I'm super proud of them because all those artists are still working hard, playing shows. They won, but it's still a grind. That's what I'm saying. It doesn't matter if you win or don't, it's still a grind playing shows, and making a living doing what they love.”

The Voice airs Monday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Streams next day on Peacock.
