A suburban police department has issued a warning about a popular game played by high school seniors as graduation approaches, saying the game could lead to dangerous results and that “one bad decision can turn into something serious really fast.”
The warning, posted to Facebook Monday morning by the Gurnee Police Department, starts out of saying “Senior Assassin Season is here.”
“We know this is a popular senior tradition and something many students look forward to each year,” the warning began. “But here’s the reality. What feels like a game to you can look very different to everyone else around you.”
The game, often played by high school students nationwide in the springtime, involves students chasing each other with water, NERF-style or realistic-looking guns. It is typically played outside of school hours and away from school grounds in residential neighborhoods, with students sometimes trespassing or hiding on private property to capture a target.
Numerous other suburban police departments and villages sent out messages and warnings in recent weeks about the dangers of the game, which could lead to real harm.
In Gurnee, police said they are seeing the game played with water or replica guns that can be mistaken for real firearms, and that they’ve received calls to 911 from concerned residents. Officials also said the game has lead to police responding to what appear to be real threats, along with reports of dangerous driving while chasing others and trespassing.
Gurnee police also said the game could lead to potential criminal charges, “depending on the situation.”
“Parents: Have a quick conversation with your student about how fast things can go sideways and how their actions might be seen by others,” the warning said.
The warning from police also addressed students directly.
“Students: We get it, it’s supposed to be fun,” the warning said. “But running up on someone with something that looks like a gun, chasing people in cars, or cutting through yards is not worth it. One bad decision can turn into something serious really fast.”
In April 2024, one incident related to the game led students in Gurnee to target another with a water gun inside a busy restaurant,
“An adult, who was a concealed carry holder, in the restaurant mistook the situation for a genuine threat, and the situation could have escalated quickly,” Gurnee police said at the time. “The gravity of the situation cannot be emphasized enough; it had the potential to lead to serious consequences.”
Gurnee police encouraged community members to call 911 if they see someone running through neighborhoods, chasing others or carrying what appears to be a weapon.
“We would rather check and make sure everyone is safe than miss something that could be serious,” police said.
