On the one hand, I love that Ben Johnson publicly pushed quarterback Caleb Williams hard in 2025 — especially when it came to his throwing accuracy. But on the other hand, the Chicago Bears’ head coach putting a 70 percent completion rate out there for public fodder has turned into some mind-numbingly dumb discourse among fans. And just when you thought that was in our rear-view mirror, it is back again.
Check out what Johnson said (h/t Bears Wire) about what he wants from his quarterback in terms of completion percentage in 2026:
“If we want to be elite, we want to be that 70 percent marker. We fell short of that. And we don’t shy away from that. I think when you look at it, for us to get to 65 percent completion even, cut that in half, we need to find 40 more completions over the course of the season. Well, let me tell you something. When you watch the self-scout, there’s 80, 90, 100 completions we left out on the table. And I’m not just talking about passes dropped.”
Is Ben Johnson saying that he wants Caleb Williams to complete 70 percent of his passes on par with throwing a pound of red meat into a cage of lions? Sure. But I am digging that the Bears’ head coach isn’t afraid to challenge his quarterback to strive for bigger and better things. It isn’t just getting to 70 percent because of a love for round numbers. Instead, it is about finding more completions. The way I see it, more completions lead to more first downs, more extended drives, more scoring opportunities, more points, and ultimately, more wins.

FOX Sports NFL reporter Henry McKenna also snags a quote from Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson about his desire to improve Caleb Williams’ completion percentage in 2026:
“We need to get the completion percentage up. And so we’ll look at that as we go through the cut-ups of where we can best do that. There were probably 80 or 90 throws on tape that we felt like could have been completions. You’re always going to have some drops by the route-runners. … We need to find a way to complete some of those other ones, though. That’s really the challenge for Caleb. If we do that, then we’ll be 65%, 70% completion, which is closer to where we want to be.”
Publicly pushing this Caleb Williams 70 percent completion rate angle speaks to Ben Johnson’s belief in his quarterback. We are just one season into the Johnson era, but one of my main takeaways from his time as Chicago’s head coach is that his words carry weight because he isn’t saying stuff just to stay stuff. In other words, if Ben thinks Caleb can get to a 70 percent completion rate, then he is going to say it out loud. He isn’t going to hide from it. And if he didn’t believe that Williams could pull it off, I don’t think he would be saying it aloud to reporters.

I’d like to think that another year in the system would bring an added level of comfort that would allow him to process more quickly and get the ball to open his receivers with more accuracy. After posting a minus-6.9 percent completion percentage over expected, it feels like there is nowhere to go but up for Chicago’s QB1.
For what it’s worth, I am still vibing with the sentiment that colleague Patrick K. Flowers shared last December when he said to stop obsessing over Caleb Williams’ completion percentage. There is a part of me that believes what Patrick believes in that 70 percent is an unrealistic number to reach. Tom Brady never reached that number. Neither did Peyton Manning. Aaron Rodgers did it once, but only once. However, there is also a part of me that thinks that if Caleb Williams can beat the Green Bay Packers three times in four tries and win a home playoff game, then completing 70 percent of his passes isn’t all that far-fetched.
