The next state senator representing Caswell, Orange, and Person counties will be Jonah Garson, a top North Carolina Democratic Party official, following Sen. Graig Meyer’s departure to lead the North Carolina Justice Center.

Garson was designated by a senatorial selection committee — made up of two delegates from each county — on Saturday over state Reps. Allen Buansi and Renée Price, both of whom represent Orange County in the General Assembly, as well as Person County local official Kenneth Perry and attorney Sheila Mikhail.

He serves as state Democratic Party vice chair under Anderson Clayton and is also a member of the Orange County planning board. Garson practices law at Parry Law, PLLC, in Chapel Hill, focusing on commercial and civil litigation.

Senator Graig Meyer to resign North Carolina Senate seat. Here’s why and what comes next.

Garson’s pitch to the committee centered on upholding democracy by protecting North Carolinians’ voting rights, maintaining health care access by working to uphold Medicaid expansion, and ensuring equal access to educational resources — an issue that gained prominence just a day before the committee met to make the appointment when the state Supreme Court said judges lack the authority to overhaul state educational funding.

“In spite of today’s bad, if not predictable, news, we are one step closer with the election of Justice Riggs to taking the Court. And when we re-elect Justice Anita Earls this year, we will be just one step away from our goal,” Garson said in a Facebook post the day of the decision, resharing a video interview with education activists.

In a video posted on social media on Saturday evening, Garson thanked supporters and committee members for their support, as well as Meyer for his 12 years of service in the legislature.

“Thank you to everyone who lent support for this campaign, who wrote letters of recommendation, who made those endorsements, who helped me put together the best job application we could for this very hard job,” Garson said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do ahead, and I am thrilled to be doing it with you.”

Clayton congratulated Garson and thanked the committee members for their work on the selection process. “I’m ready to continue the work across the state to ensure Democrats and folks across North Carolina remain united to defeat Republicans this November,” she said in a post on X.

Serving in the state Senate will mark Garson’s first time in office. He previously ran unsuccessfully against Buansi in the 2022 Democratic primary for House District 56, losing by less than 500 votes.

Garson must ultimately be appointed by Gov. Josh Stein to serve the remainder of Meyer’s term. He will then appear on the November ballot against a Republican opponent to represent the heavily Democratic district until 2028.
