A South Carthage homemaker, Ms. Lizzie Johnson Dawes, departed this life at the Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital at 2:50 p.m. Thursday afternoon April 2, 2026 where she was admitted Monday March 30th.
Pastor Steve Warren will officiate at the 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon April 8th funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Gordonsville Cemetery.
The family will receive friends only on Wednesday April 8th from 9 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral services.
Ms. Dawes was the youngest of eleven children, four sons and seven daughters of the late Claude Johnson who died at the age of 67 on November 12, 1972 and Elsie Lee Hawkins Johnson who died at the age of 71 on November 19, 1983 and was born Lizzie Lou Johnson in the Moss Community of Clay County on November 27, 1953.
Ms. Dawes tragically lost her only child, Christy Leanne Burton who died at the age of 21 on December 1, 1994 as the result of an automobile accident on Highway # 25 East of the highway # 231 intersection when she fell asleep while driving while returning home from the night shift at Wal-Mart in Hendersonville.
Siblings preceded her in death were James Harold Johnson who died April 26, 1989 at the age of 52, Charles Johnson , Billy L. Johnson who died November 12, 2008 at the age of 58 and William Edgar Johnson; sisters, Lucille Johnson Shoemake who died at the age of 73, Pauline Johnson Goolsby who died March 23, 2002 at the age of 63, Eldridge Christine Johnson Smith who died August 24, 2022 at the age of 81, Linda Carline (Carol) Johnson Walls who died August 5, 2006 at the age of 58, Sarah Katherine Johnson Strong who died April 3, 2016 at the age of 84.
Ms. Dawes was a non-denominational Christian.
Surviving is her last sibling, Claudine Johnson Crawford of Smithville, caregiver, Amber Smith of the Rome Community. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews , and great nieces and great-nephews.
