Dexter Lawrence is a new name to watch on the NFL rumor mill.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Lawrence has requested a trade from the New York Giants. Schefty adds that the stud defensive tackle will not participate in the team’s offseason training program, which is scheduled to begin on Tuesday. This bit of news is the latest in what has been a tumultuous last few offseasons between Dexter and the Giants. The two sides have failed to come together on an extension, which has ultimately led to this trade request.
Is Dexter Lawrence a good trade fit for the Bears?
Public trade requests tend to end with the player getting a new deal, being traded, or stuck riding out their current contract. For the sake of this post, we can discuss the trade option. After all, the Chicago Bears could use a Pro Bowl-caliber defensive tackle in their lineup.
The New York Giants used a first-round pick (17th overall) in 2019 to draft Dexter Lawrence out of Clemson. And the return on investment has been superb. Lawrence has played in at least 16 games in six of his seven years as a pro. He was a Pro Bowler in the 2022, 2023, and 2024 seasons who earned second-team All-Pro recognition in 2022 and 2023. Lawrence’s résumé also boasts a top-10 finish in the AP Defensive Player of the Year vote in 2023. He followed that impressive 2023 season with a 2024 campaign that saw him set new career highs in sacks (9) and tackles-for-loss (8) while contributing 16 quarterback hits and 44 total tackles.
(Photo by Cooper Neill/Getty Images)All things being equal, I’d certainly be intrigued by the idea of the Bears exploring a Dexter Lawrence trade. However, I do have questions about the drop-off in his production in 2025.
Last season, Lawrence played in all 17 games and played on 68 percent of the team’s defensive snaps. However, he finished with just 31 tackles, four tackles-for-loss, and eight quarterback hits while being credited with just one-half sack. For what it’s worth, Lawrence still finished in the top-20 among defensive tackles with an 8 percent pass-rush win-rate, according to ESPN’s data. And Pro Football Focus listed Lawrence as the 11th-highest-graded interior defensive lineman. I’m not sure why the box score numbers don’t reflect the advanced metrics. Nevertheless, I am still intrigued by a possible Lawrence trade.

If the Bears are going to swing a trade for Dexter Lawrence (or any notable defensive player) this offseason, they will need to clear some cap space. Over The Cap’s data has Lawrence with a $26.958 million cap hit in each of the next two seasons. Meanwhile, the Bears sit with just $243,078 in cap space. No team has less space under the cap than Chicago, which could be a limiting factor in making a deal for someone like Lawrence.
However, this front office has yet to restructure any contracts. And as colleague Patrick K. Flowers pointed out earlier in the offseason, some creative bookkeeping could create enough space for this team to add an impact player. A three-time Pro Bowler and two-time second-team All-Pro defensive lineman would certainly fit that criteria. With that being said, we will continue to monitor the rumor mill to see which teams are sniffing around a possible Dexter Lawrence trade. And with the 2026 NFL Draft coming up, I imagine that teams willing to trade draft capital would go to the front of the line.
