No. 5 Alabama gymnastics will not advance to the national championship after several missteps during routines caused the team’s second-lowest overall score for the season, a 197.175.
“This team has been No. 3 and 4 in the country pretty much the whole season,” head coach Ashley Johnston said. “Unfortunately, it wasn’t our night to move on tonight.”
This was the first time since 2023 that the Crimson Tide’s season ended in regionals. Since 2017 Alabama has not made it to the final night, the final four, of the national championships.
Alabama competed in the NCAA Corvallis regional final against No. 4 UCLA, No. 12 Utah and No. 13 Minnesota.
Alabama finished in last place. UCLA took first with a 197.725, Minnesota took second with a 197.625, and Utah placed third with a 197.5.
To continue to the NCAA national championship in Fort Worth, Texas, Alabama would have needed to place first or second. UCLA and Minnesota will move on to the national championship.
Rotation 1
Alabama started the meet on the balance beam. UCLA was on the vault, Utah was on the uneven bars, and Minnesota was on the floor.
Alabama made a 49.3 on the balance beam with sophomore Kylee Kvamme as the Crimson Tide’s highest scorer with a 9.9.
For the second half of the season, the balance beam has been one of Alabama’s worst rotations. There have been several falls across several meets, but the Crimson Tide had no falls in Corvallis.
“We chose to start on beam,” Johnston said. “I think starting on beam, starting really fierce and aggressive, was the right move for our team. I think they were really excited coming off of that event.”
Minnesota’s Jordyn Lyden had the highest balance beam score with a 9.95.
Rotation 2
For the second rotation, Alabama moved to the floor. UCLA was on the uneven bars, Utah was on the balance beam, and Minnesota was on the vault.
Alabama posted a score of 49.35 on the floor to bring its total to 98.675. UCLA had a 98.75, Utah had a 98.625, and Minnesota had a 98.825.
Freshman Azaraya Ra-Akbar and senior Gabby Gladieux each made a 9.9 on the floor as the Crimson Tide’s highest scorers.
UCLA’s Jordan Chiles got a 10 on floor to mark the highest floor score for the night.
Rotation 3
Alabama was on the vault for the third rotation, UCLA was on the balance beam, Utah was on the floor, and Minnesota was on the uneven bars.
On the vault, Alabama made a 49.125 to bring its total to 147.8. Junior Jamison Sears posted a 9.2 after falling in the second spot of the lineup.
Following that fall, Johnston put Kvamme in over freshman McKenzie Matters, who was originally in the lineup. Kvamme made a 9.925 as Alabama’s highest vault scorer.
“We always have about three different plans depending on what certain routines score, who on our roster brings consistency, scoring potential, adaptability, and Kylee had a really great warmup,” Johnston said. “Following a mistake, we felt like she was the best person suited for that moment.”
UCLA’s Chiles, Utah’s Makenna Smith and Minnesota’s Arianna Ostrum each posted a 9.95 on the vault.
Rotation 4
For the final rotation, Alabama was on the uneven bars and posted a 49.375. UCLA was on the floor, Utah was on the vault, and Minnesota was on the balance beam.
Senior Natalia Pawlak and sophomore Ryan Fuller each posted a 9.9 to mark the Crimson Tide’s highest uneven bars score.
Junior Chloe LaCoursiere fell on her dismount and posted a 9.125.
Minnesota’s Lyden and Utah’s Avery Neff each posted a 9.95 as the highest uneven bars scores for the night.
Alabama will be back in action next year in Coleman Coliseum.
“I want this team to be remembered for being culture trailblazers,” Johnston said. “I’m proud of what they’ve created. They truly have been leaders of a culture transformation, and I think have set an amazing foundation for us to continue to grow.”
