If you’re a fan of offense, you may not have found Game 1 of today’s doubleheader particularly entertaining. However, if pitchers’ duels are more your thing, this game was right up your alley. The game remained scoreless through seven innings, with each team collecting just a single hit until the eighth.
Today’s starting pitchers, Edward Cabrera and Slade Cecconi, stole the show, shutting down the opposing offenses through six innings. They combined to retire the first 12 batters, allowing just one hit apiece. The temperature at first pitch was just 44 degrees, with winds hovering around 15 miles an hour. The pitcher-friendly weather definitely appeared to help keep this game scoreless for so long, with fly balls by Pete Crow-Armstrong and Bo Naylor each falling short of the wall due to the wind.
Cecconi struck out six batters across his six innings of work, just one more than his season debut last week against the Mariners. Last outing, he allowed six earned runs, but he had the Cubs looking foolish today at Progressive Field. He didn’t give the Cubs many chances to score, allowing just three baserunners. Cecconi recorded 14 whiffs, with a majority of them coming thanks to his four-seam fastball.
Cabrera almost copied his start from last Monday, going 5.2 scoreless innings with just one hit allowed. He had a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but a misread in right field by Michael Conforto gave the Guardians their only hit on the day, a double by CJ Kayfus. His changeup and curveball were absolutely filthy, leaving the Cleveland hitters absolutely clueless. Command was an issue for Cabrera, as he allowed five walks, with 46 of his 97 pitches being balls. However, the fact that he was still so effective despite these command issues makes his start even more impressive.
Cabrera is the Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game, having yet another magnificent outing to begin his Cubs career. He’s now allowed just 2 hits across 11.2 scoreless innings of work in a Cubs uniform.

— Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) April 5, 2026I’d normally talk about the lack of clutch hitting in these types of games, but both teams pitched so well that the baserunners were extremely limited. The one real jam came in the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Guardians had the bases loaded. After the double by Kayfus, Nico Hoerner made an impressive heads-up play to keep the game scoreless. Cabrera walked the next two batters, but Caleb Thielbar escaped the jam on a weak pop-up by Naylor.
The only offensive showing for the Cubs was in the eighth inning, as Miguel Amaya came through and drove in the game’s lone run via a 105.7 mph single. The Cubs will now get ready for Game 2 of the doubleheader, with a projected matchup of Shota Imanaga and Parker Messick.
