No. 5 Alabama gymnastics placed second at the NCAA regional semifinals on Friday, advancing to Sunday’s regional finals. Alabama scored 197.225, and No. 12 Utah placed first with a 197.5. Oregon State placed third with a 196.375, and Denver came in last place with a 195.95.
“I am incredibly proud of our team tonight,” Alabama head coach Ashley Johnston said. “This postseason format is very stressful and pressure filled, and I thought our team did a really great job of approaching it with their fierce joy mentality.”
Alabama will compete against Utah, UCLA and Minnesota in the Sunday finals.
Rotation 1
Since Alabama was the highest seed in the competition, it competed in Olympic order, starting on the vault. Utah was on the uneven bars, Denver was on the balance beam, and Oregon State was on the floor. On the vault, Alabama made a 49.175.
Junior Jamison Sears made a 9.875 to mark Alabama’s highest vault score.
There was a three-way tie for the vault title with a score of 9.9 between Utah’s Ashley Glynn, Avery Neff and Denver’s Shyla Bhatia.
Rotation 2
For the second rotation, Alabama moved to the uneven bars, Utah to the balance beam, Denver to the floor and Oregon State to the vault. On the uneven bars, Alabama posted a 49.525 to bring its total to 98.7.
After two rotations, Utah had a 98.7, Denver had a 98.225, and Oregon State had a 98.1.
The Crimson Tide’s highest uneven bars score was a 9.925. Sophomore Paityn Walker and freshman Azaraya Ra-Akbar each made this score.
Ra-Akbar and Walker shared the title with Oregon State’s Taylor DeVries.
Rotation 3
The Crimson Tide moved to the balance beam for the third rotation and posted a 49.175 to bring its total to 147.875. Utah moved to the floor, Denver moved to the vault, and Oregon State moved to the uneven bars.
Alabama’s highest balance beam scorers were senior Gabby Gladieux, sophomore Gabby Ladanyi, and sophomore Kylee Kvamme, who each posted a 9.85.
Utah’s Neff took the balance beam title with a 9.925.
Rotation 4
Alabama’s final rotation was on the floor, and it posted a 49.35. Utah was on the vault, Denver was on the uneven bars, and Oregon State was on the balance beam.
In the second position, senior Rachel Rybicki fell and posted a 9.0.
“There was just a couple of little mistakes here and there that are absolutely in our control to fix,” Johnston said. “We just need to chip away, get every quarter tenth possible so that we can build the best team.”
Ra-Akbar and Gladieux were the Crimson Tide’s highest floor scorers, each posting a 9.9.
However, this was not enough for Gladieux and Ra-Akbar to take the floor title; Utah’s Neff did with a 9.925. Neff also took the all-around title with a 39.65.
Alabama will compete Sunday at 7 p.m. CT in the regional finals.
“We’re really excited and proud to be in this top two that is advancing to Sunday,” Johnston said. “I think there’s still a ton of room to improve on top of it.”
