New details emerged Friday about a bizarre and tragic incident in suburban Oak Park that sent 11 people to the hospital.
Police said the driver of an SUV struck several other cars and a Pace bus before fatally shooting himself.
Harlem Avenue and Lake Street were closed for hours following the unsettling incident.
“I saw the bus driver, She was emotional.” said Dave Fee, the store manager of Wild Fork Market nearby. “She was crying and on the phone. She was very distressed.”
Police said the 48-year-old driver was speeding southbound when he swerved to avoid hitting a pedestrian in a crosswalk – crashing into bus and white van.
Fourteen people were injured, according to Oak Park officials; eleven of them – taken to the hospital.
“There was one passenger who was on the phone and was crying,” Fee said. She looked to be in pain.”
Police said the driver shot himself in the head and was found slumped over in his vehicle.
It’s unclear why the incident took such a tragic turn.
Psychologist Dr. Daniel Martinez reminds people to look for red flags from those who may be suffering in silence, like changes in behavior.
“Mental health issues are a significant problem in America,” said Martinez, of Comprehensive Clinical Services. We see people in crisis all the time.”
“Something like this to happen is very tragic… and hopefully won’t happen again,” Fee said.
