South Carolina will be playing for another national championship on Sunday afternoon, and the Gamecocks women’s basketball team that’s become a national powerhouse under Dawn Staley booked its spot in the title game at UConn’s expense.
The same UConn program that pounded South Carolina by 23 points in last season’s national championship game and the same UConn team that came into Friday night with a perfect 38-0 record. Make that 38-1 now, courtesy of a remarkable second-half performance when top-seeded South Carolina outscored fellow top seed UConn, 38-22, on the way to a stunningly easy 62-48 victory in Phoenix.
The Gamecocks, who are now 36-3 as they try to tack another national crown onto the titles they won under Staley in 2017, 2022 and 2024, trailed 26-24 at halftime on Friday night but made that deficit a distant memory by game’s end. They smothered the Huskies in the second half and held UConn to 31% shooting from the field and 29% from 3-point range for the night.
It was a night of revenge and now renewed opportunity for Staley’s team, which will play for everything on Sunday (3:30 p.m. ET, ABC) against the winner of late Friday night’s second national semifinal between SEC rival Texas and UCLA. The Longhorns and Bruins are also No. 1 seeds in a women’s Final Four full of nothing but them.
South Carolina will try to make sure it’s the best of the best come Sunday after vanquishing the previously perfect Huskies in a stunning second-half display. The victory also snapped UConn’s overall 54-game winning streak, denying the Huskies a shot at a repeat national championship on Sunday.

— Southeastern Conference (@SEC) April 4, 2026The Gamecocks only shot 38% from the field themselves on Friday night, but it was plenty good enough. South Carolina pounded UConn on the glass all night, outrebounding the Huskies, 47-32, and winning going away despite turning the ball over 15 times.
When the final seconds ticked off the clock, it was time to celebrate for Staley and Co., with an eye toward one more step on Sunday.

— Southeastern Conference (@SEC) April 4, 2026Ta’Niya Latson led a balanced scoring sheet for South Carolina with 16 points, making all 10 of her free throw attempts. She added 11 rebounds, with Madina Okot snatching 9 boards and Joyce Edwards pulling down 8 rebounds.
Edwards also had 11 points, and the Gamecocks got a huge lift off the bench from Agot Makeer, who pumped in 14 points. That foul line was a huge place for South Carolina on Friday night, with Staley’s team knocking down 18 of 22 attempts from the charity stripe compared to UConn, which only shot 6 free throws for the game.
