IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — A massive landslide has forced a family out of their Irondequoit home, and they’re not sure if they’ll ever be able to return.
The Rin family is packing up their home on Carlsam Drive after the Irondequoit Fire Marshal declared their house unsafe due to the landslide in their backyard – which measures about 20 to 30 feet deep and sits just feet from the family’s back door.
“It’s shocking. Like, we have to pack everything,” Kardy Rin said.
Family’s next steps
Kardy Rin, her husband and their two children, aged 3 and 5, are now sleeping on the floor of a relative’s house as they wait to learn the future of their home of 10 years. The family has celebrated countless milestones there.
“Christmas. Thanksgiving. Birthday parties, friends and family barbecue. The craziest part. We even got married in it. We did our wedding ceremony at our house,” Rin said.
Rin’s brother, Tanavung Tim, is helping them pack. He said they noticed the landslide begin earlier this week and watched it get worse each day.
“Well, it rained heavily earlier in the week on Monday and, around Wednesday, we, started noticing that, the backyard was sliding, and, every day it got progressively worse. You know, we pretty much we have to move out within 24 hours,” Tim said.
Searching for answers
The family said they haven’t received answers from local or state officials. With rain in the forecast, they’re worried the landslide will worsen.
“I haven’t heard from the state, the county, the town of Irondequoit…So we don’t know who’s saying what. So basically, no one’s giving us an answer. We’re just waiting and waiting and waiting,” Rin said.
The Rin family has since moved out of their home. They said their insurance isn’t covering the cost of the home, meaning if it’s totaled, they won’t be reimbursed.
News10NBC reached out to their insurance company, Farmer’s Insurance, to confirm. We also reached out to the town of Irondequoit, New York State’s DEC, and the Monroe County Soil and Water District, but with it being a holiday weekend, it may be a while before receiving answers.
