ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A man with a loaded handgun was detained at Rochester General Hospital Friday afternoon, according to the Rochester Police Department.
RPD tells News10NBC it responded to the hospital around noon for reports of a man with a gun. When officers got there, they say the man did have a handgun and was on one of the hospital floor when security detained him. No shots were fired and no one was hurt.
Police say the situation is “contained.” Officers took the gun, a loaded 9mm Glock, from the 35-year-old man.
RPD says its reviewing video, speaking with hospital staff, and interviewing witnesses. It plans to give us more information throughout the day.
RGH issues a statement
RGH released the following statement Friday afternoon:
“Earlier today, Rochester General Hospital (RGH) experienced a security incident that was quickly identified and contained. Hospital security personnel acted immediately and safely detained an individual with a handgun. The Rochester Police Department responded promptly, secured the scene and is leading the ongoing investigation.
At no point were any shots fired, and there are no injuries. At this time, there is no active threat to patients, visitors, or staff.
The safety and well-being of our patients, employees, and community remain our top priority. Care and operations at the hospital continue as normal.
We understand that situations like this can be concerning, and we appreciate the cooperation and support of our team members, patients and community.
Rochester Regional Health is currently conducting an internal investigation and working closely with law enforcement to learn more details about what happened. We will share additional information as appropriate.”
