WEBSTER, N.Y. — The Webster Town Board has taken the next step on a proposed cell tower project.
Board members voted unanimously to send a plan to build a 135-foot tower by Verizon Wireless to the planning board for further review. The vote happened at a meeting Thursday night.
Verizon wants to put the tower on Wildflower Drive. This is the company’s second proposal after a similar plan to put a tower near Creekside Trail was rejected last year.

Neighbors raised concerns at the meeting about property values and potential health impacts, the same as a year ago.
“First of all, it’s like right behind my house, like 100 yards behind my house. Everytime I get up I see deer, I see wildlife — it’s a beautiful area to live here in Webster. I don’t want a cell tower. I don’t want to deal with the uncertainty of what are they going to do to the land. How is it going to affect the land? Honestly, how is it going to affect my property value?” Bob Marefka said.
Another person living in Webster, Christina McEwen, expressed concerns over long-term exposure to radio frequency radiation.
“Let me start with what matters most — our children, like my young daughter, and pregnant women, like myself. Federal and scientific agencies acknowledge there are still uncertainties around long-term exposure to radio frequency radiation,” Christina McEwen said.
The Verizon representative told neighbors federal and state laws limit what municipalities can consider.
“I bet everybody who stood up tonight and complained about cell towers has a cell phone. And they all rely on them, they expect them to work when they want them to work, and under Verizon Wireless’ FCC license, it must provide adequate service, it has no choice,” the representative said. “They don’t work on magic, they only function by a network of very carefully placed location sensitive towers that are not too tall, not too short, not too close to the neighboring cells and not too far away from the neighboring cells.”
The planning board will now review the proposal.
