One of the cars involved in the crash looks similar to a car that deputies and troopers were chasing on Wednesday night that got away. That chase started in Brighton and ended when the car, believed to be stolen, crashed into parked cars on Rochester’s southwest side. We’ve reached out to Irondequoit Police to see if the two chases are connected.

We’ve also reached out to police to learn what prompted the chase and the condition of the person getting medical treatment. Check back for updates.

    Chase policies for police departments

As News10NBC has covered, different agencies have different chase policies. The Rochester Police Department’s policy says officers shouldn’t chase a suspect if the risks outweigh the benefits. Officers must consider the seriousness of the offense, traffic conditions, time of day, and the danger if the suspect isn’t immediately caught.

That’s more restrictive than New York State Police’s policy, which says troopers should make “every reasonable effort to apprehend suspects in a fleeing vehicle.” However, just like RPD, troopers are required to consider the nature of the offense, the safety of people in the area, and traffic conditions.
