Quote of the Day: Albert Einstein on the Importance of Curiosity

Albert Einstein is probably one of the most well-known people in human history. Not just one of the most famous or influential scientists, but just generally a famous human being who had such an impact that most people know his name. Outside of just recognizing who he is, most of us also know that he’s responsible for developing the theory of relativity, as well as coming up with the equation E = mc2. But he was also very intelligent all around and left us with so many quotes that Parade had to pick one for our quote of the day.

Einstein was born in Germany in 1879 and went on to become a physicist responsible for creating the special and general theories of relativity. General relativity revolved around “how gravity affects the fabric of space-time,” according to Space.com. He later won a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921 for his “explanation of the photoelectric effect,” according to Britannica.

Einstein spoke on more than just science and mathematics, however. He was a lifelong pacifist and heavily criticized WWI. Unfortunately, and predictably, once the Nazi Party came to power in the aftermath of the First World War, they called Einstein’s work “Jewish physics” with a derogatory implication and targeted the physicist, who was Jewish. And they didn’t just come after his work, but even called for him to be physically harmed or killed. This led Einstein to leave Germany in 1932 and never go back.

He settled in Princeton, NJ, and became a resident scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study, which became a hotspot for great physicists from around the world. He lived out the rest of his life there, too.

With such a great mind, it’s no shocker that he has some great wisdom to share for Parade’s readers. And today, that quote has to do with the importance of curiosity.

“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence.”

There’s often this notion that scientific or mathematical minds are a bit rigid in their thinking or that they’re very black-and-white minded. Sure, they need to continue asking “Why?” to come up with new theories and answer scientific questions, but they might not be the first people that you’d deem curious. However, Albert Einstein has multiple quotes about curiosity and the importance of it, including our quote of the day.

Even though there are a lot of misattributed Einstein quotes, this one definitely came from the physicist himself. LIFE Magazine editor William Miller went to Einstein’s house in New Jersey to interview him for a piece that ended up being published in May 1955, less than a month after the physicist died on April 18, 1955, per Quote Investigator. The article was titled "Old Man's Advice to Youth: 'Never Lose a Holy Curiosity.'"

To get the full scope of what this quote means, we should look at the full sentiment. It reads as follows:

“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend only a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity.”

Quote Investigator reported that in a 2007 biography of Einstein, the author—Walter Isaacson—wrote that the famous physicist believed there was a reason for everything, “that nature was not cluttered with extraneous attributes.” So there had to be a reason for curiosity, and as Einstein says in this quote, it exists to keep minds questioning. This, in turn, creates appreciation for the universe and all that’s in it.

Sure, there are things that scientists haven’t been able to answer or explain definitively, like the meaning of life, what the afterlife looks like or the full depth of reality. However, Einstein posits that it’s good we’re still curious and strive to find answers to these questions, whether to find actual answers or to just theorize and come to our own conclusions.

As he says in the last sentence of the larger quote, it’s enough if our curiosity gives us only a little bit of clarity. And for that, we should “never lose a holy curiosity,” equating our desire for knowledge through curiosity to something sacred.

Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.”“I speak to everyone in the same way, whether he is the garbage man or the president of the university.”
