ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Easter shoppers should expect to pay more this year for candy, clothing and dinner.
The National Retail Federation projects shoppers will spend $24.9 billion on Easter this year. That includes everything from food to basket stuffers, with total food spending estimated at $7.5 billion and candy at $3.5 billion.
News10NBC’s Erin Mahon compared prices at local stores for a typical Easter dinner with five premade items: a green, a grain, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese and ham. At Wegmans, the meal costs $89.45. At Tops, it costs $67.40. Aldi has the lowest price at $42.16.
For shoppers looking for something more local, Gates Big M offers another option. Co-owner Greg Newman said the store puts its ham orders in months in advance of a holiday.
“Our retails for the hams are the same retails we charged last year. And again some of our produce items are very comparable to what we charged last year also,” Newman said.
Newman said keeping prices nearly the same year to year could mean absorbing the difference when costs rise.
“It is. I mean, we will adjust retails if we have to. We just haven’t felt the need for the ham prices this year. We didn’t feel a need to change our price,” Newman said. “It’s important to us to be conscious of what’s going on in the world. And you know, prices are going up and we’re trying to do what we can to make it affordable.”
Local shoppers had mixed reactions to Easter dinner prices.
“I mean the meat prices are — I’m not happy with that but you know, then again, the people who raise them, they gotta make a living,” said Stephen Fish.
“Baby back ribs, I’ve been using the grass fed meat and, a, lot less oil in there. yeah it came out great,” said another shopper.
Harivi Bitsas said she needs lamb for Easter regardless of the price.
There are many ways to celebrate Easter, not just with ham or maybe not at all. Shoppers should check their local grocery store’s Easter hours before making the trip. Big M is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Sunday.
