Today is another opening day in the Chicago Cubs farm system, with Low-A Myrtle Beach kicking things off. They join the Triple-A Iowa Cubs in action, with the Double-A Knoxville Smokies and High-A South Bend Cubs kicking off tomorrow.
You would certainly love to see James Triantos have a big bounce-back year and set himself up to be a big league depth option (at minimum) next year:Cubs prospect James Triantos dealt with an injury plagued 2025 season. Now that he's healthy in 2026, he's ready to show once again just how good he can be. t.co/rSyQryz2BO

— Carson Wolf (@TheWrigleyWire) April 1, 2026 Kevin Alcantara is also raking in the first week of the year:Kevin Alcantara has his 2nd HR of the season. He hit it 103.3 mph, and raised his OPS to 1.185 on the season. pic.twitter.com/zogKldvlmh
— Carson Wolf (@TheWrigleyWire) March 31, 2026 An interesting usage note on lefty relief prospect Riley Martin, who was added to the 40-man roster last fall:The Cubs are attempting to lengthen Riley Martin out at AAA this year, with today marking his second start and 9-out outing since 2022.The good: 1 run in 3 innings.Could be better: 3 XBH, 2 BB and just 2 whiffsIntriguing: held 95+ velo the whole time, threw 4 pitches
— Cubs Prospects – Bryan Smith (@cubprospects) March 31, 2026 Could mean that the Cubs want a little more multi-inning depth among their up-down contingent (more than merely wanting another one-inning lefty), which you could take as a signal about the anticipated length of Jordan Wicks’ absence, about the likelihood that Luke Little or Ryan Rolison is the first lefty up, or simply about how the Cubs see Martin being most useful. We know that the ability to pitch multiple innings OR a single inning OR a match-up situation is very valuable, but it’s also pretty hard to develop that versatility at a level where you’re effective in any situation in the big leagues. Interesting that neither Grant Kipp nor Connor Schultz, who were semi-surprising non-roster invitees to Spring Training, made the Triple-A roster to open the season. They will presumably be pitching at Double-A when that roster comes out tomorrow. Speaking of the Double-A Knoxville pitching contingent, Greg Huss says that it’ll include 2025 draftee Jake Knapp. That’s a professional debut at Double-A, which is a significant assignment and likely says a lot about Knapp’s polish and about the Cubs’ new aggressiveness to get older/experienced pitchers up the ladder more quickly (something Tyler Zombro has suggested). I can’t wait to see how that Angels-like aggressiveness plays. If you missed this offseason’s mention of Knapp, who was one of the best (by results) pitchers in college baseball last year:So why was he an under-slot 8th round pick? Well, injuries left Knapp pretty old for a college draft pick (he’s already 25), and that 2025 season was only his second bit of college experience (the other was a partial season in 2023, of not so great results). He was not seen as having particularly loud stuff in the draft, succeeding more on pitchability. Those types do not get drafted particularly high, especially at his age and experience. That said, if you were going to find a surprise win – one that people see in hindsight as so obvious – this is what it could look like.
Luis Martinez-Gomez also figures to be on the Double-A roster to open the year, and I cannot wait to see what his season looks like. Serious breaout potential. Meanwhile, Arizona Phil suggests 2025 draftee Kaleb Wing will not open his pro career at Myrtle Beach (which would’ve been a big assignment for a high school draftee who became a full-time pitcher relatively late in high school). A modest bummer, but it’s still certainly possible he could open up in the ACL and then get a cup at Low-A Myrtle Beach late in the year. He’s not going to throw a ton of competitive innings this year either way. Probably still raw, but huge upside. Phil indicates that fellow 2025 high school pick Josiah Hartshorn will start at Myrtle Beach, however, together with recent IFA signee Juan Cabada, who’d be skipping the ACL entirely. LOVE to see that. The last Cubs prospect who did that was Jefferson Rojas, if I remember correctly. Baseball America lists the end-of-spring minor league transactions for every organization, which always includes a large round of releases (as teams pare down minor league rosters to meet the overall organizational maximum). For the Cubs:Released: RHP Tyler Beede (AAA)Released: RHP Eduardo Castillo (R)Released: RHP Dominic Hambley (A+)Released: RHP Ben Heller (AAA)Released: RHP Nick Hull (AA)Released: RHP Johansel Javier (DSL)Released: RHP Ronny Lopez (A)Released: RHP Walker Powell (AAA)Released: RHP Joel Sierra (A)Released: RHP Sam Thoresen (AA)Released: LHP Darlin Ventura (DSL)Released: LHP Chase Watkins (AAA)Released: SS Christopher Paciolla (A+)Released: SS Jaylen Palmer (AA)Released: IF Albert Gutierrez (R)Released: OF Parker Chavers (AA)
Definitely some names we know on that list, and they’ll now look for opportunities elsewhere, either in affiliated ball or in an independent league. Alternatively, some will see this as the end of the line for their baseball career. It’s a sad reality in the business. Best of luck to them regardless. I always like to hear these guys’ opinions:ICYMI @cubprospects and I got about as Hot Takey as you’ll ever find us on the podcast this week. Here were 10 opinions we formed based on the 1st weekend of @IowaCubs games and Spring Training. For 40 minutes breaking down these takes: t.co/8EogdZbtj7 pic.twitter.com/KKLuegLTXD
