What’s Next For Jaylon and Kyler? New Falcons Uniforms, Hard Knocks Picks Two Teams, and Other Bears Bullets

Day 73 of the Chicago Bears offseason. I will usually take myself out to lunch after my weekly visit with my therapist. But I didn’t do that on Wednesday. Instead, I took my lunch break to do grocery shopping. And I’m glad I did, too, because the Oreo ice cream bars I purchased were so delicious that it made it worth the trip.

A lot has been rattling in my mind since pressing publish on this piece about Kyler Gordon and Jaylon Johnson getting a clean slate in 2026. Do the Bears trust these players to be healthy? If not, how does that impact their draft plans? What are the team’s contingency plans behind the starters in the secondary? Are Gordon and Johnson good fits for Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen’s scheme? These are fair questions to ask when you see how this offseason is unfolding in a way that is prioritizing getting Allen’s kind of players while pushing players who weren’t schematic fits last year out the door. I didn’t want to squeeze it in that post, but I thought it was worth sharing: The Bears can create $16 million in cap space next offseason if they cut Johnson. And while the team can’t create significant space with a Gordon next year, the team could clear $10.8 million worth of room under the cap with a cut in 2028. To be clear, I’m not trying to push these guys out the door. But it is feasible that we could be seeing those two guys on the outside looking in if they can’t stay healthy. This is a big year for both (to say the least).

A quick look at the Bears’ cornerback situation behind Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon: Josh Blackwell and Zah Frazier are listed as backups behind Gordon in the nickel. Meanwhile, Dallis Flower, Jaylon Jones, Terell Smith, and Dontae Manning are pencilled in as backup boundary corners. Tyrique Stevenson is a projected starter oppossite Jaylon Johnson as a wide cornerback. But after seeing Nahshon Wright take that gig, run with it, and never give it back, I have quesitons about how much faith this coaching staff has in Stevenson. This will be a huge offseason for the 2023 second-round pick. This is what Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid said (h/t Pro Football Talk) about bringing former Bears RBs Coach Eric Bieniemy back into the fold as the team’s offensive coordiantor: “Yeah, I’m fired up to have him back. When you lose a Matt Nagy, to bring a guy in who can just step in and go — that’s not an easy thing to do. So, I’m fired up to have him back. He brings great energy. Loves doing what he’s doing. All he wants to do is win football games and have a great offense. Ultimate team guy.” Eric Bieniemy watches running back Kyle Monangai during the Rookie Minicamp at Halas Hall. I’m so glad the Bears already got their Hard Knocks experience out of the way, if only because it saves me from doing an annual “Is this the year the Bears do Hard Knocks?” post. For those of you who indulge on the HBO series, just know that the next two teams are already locked in with the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots being tabbed for the show. It is the first time the defending Super Bowl champions since the series’ beginning with the 2001 Baltimore Ravens being at the hart of the show.

The Atlanta Falcons were able to land legendary rapper André 3000 to narrate the video announcing the team’s new uniforms: I’m not sure which ones they will wear when facing the Bears later this year. Because in addition to the new looks above, the Falcons will still rock their iconic throwback black jerseys with red helmets. As someone who values the visual, I hope Atlanta wears those when the two teams square off later in 2026. ESPN’s Ryan McFadden reports on quarterback Kirk Cousins signing with the Las Vegas Raiders. This move comes after the Los Angeles Rams and Green Bay Packers were showing interest in the 37-year-old-quarterback. I do not think this move precludes Vegas from drafting Indiana University quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the first overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. The Heisman winner and national champion signal caller is still lined up to go first overall. But once the pick is officially official, Mendoza join Cousins, who has a lengthy résumé and ample starting experience that a rookie can tap into upon arrival at Raiders HQ. The New York Post confirms that Los Angeles Rams wide receiver is in a rehab treatment center, has been there “for a substantial period of time” and is “scheduled to be there for a while longer.” It has been a wild offseason for Nacua, who I hope is getting the help and treatment he so clearly needs.
