Sheridan School District on Tuesday canceled classes for the rest of the week, beginning Wednesday, the day teachers were set to strike after going all school year without an active contract.
In a message posted to the district’s website for families of the district’s 924 students, Superintendent Gionni Thompson wrote the decision to cancel classes was meant “to prioritize student safety.”
“We understand that this disruption creates challenges for our students, families, and community, and we appreciate your patience and flexibility,” the message stated. “Sheridan School District 2 remains committed to working in good faith with (the Sheridan Education Association) to reach an agreement that supports our students, values our educators, and is fiscally responsible to our community.”
Additionally, a school board meeting previously scheduled for Thursday evening was moved to Tuesday evening, according to Kate Biester, president of the local teachers union.
Biester told The Colorado Sun she learned Monday night the meeting was rescheduled to Tuesday and was hoping the board would meet and move forward with a resolution to get back to the bargaining table with the union. She’s not sure what will happen after learning classes won’t be in session for the remainder of the week.
“I’m worried about if the school district really has the students’ best interest at heart if they’re willing to just cancel school over this instead of working with us,” she said.
