A morning round of storms brought quarter-sized hail and damaging winds to portions of the Chicago area Tuesday, sparking a number of alerts across the region, but another round of potentially severe weather is still expected and this one could bring even more risks.
Most of the region is under a severe thunderstorm watch through the afternoon hours.
The watch was issued for nearly the entire Chicago area, and portions of northwest Indiana, until 5 p.m. CT.
That includes DeKalb, LaSalle, Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall and Will counties in Illinois, and Jasper, Lake, Newton and Porter in northwest Indiana.
Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications issued an alert to residents saying it was “monitoring weather conditions” to respond to the storms.
“Thunderstorms can happen suddenly and can include flash floods, damaging winds, tornados, or dangerous lightning. It is important to be prepared to take precautions and shelter to avoid the impacts of these conditions,” the alert stated. “Stay informed and heed warnings from officials. Keep in mind outdoor sirens are intended for those outdoors to seek shelter.”
According to the NBC 5 Storm Team, the morning threats are expected to come to an end around 12 p.m., but the second wave looks to pick up around 4 p.m. and continue through the evening. This round is expected to be “more favored for the higher coverage of storms,” the National Weather Service warned.
A large part of the Chicago area is under a “slight” risk of severe weather Tuesday.
While the main threats will continue to be hail and damaging winds, there is also a slight chance for tornadoes, particularly in areas south of Chicago, according to NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Iisha Scott.
This wave of storms comes as a cold front works its way into the region, sending temperatures plummeting from the 70s into the 40s.
“It will depend on showers and storms passing through this morning if we could see this regenerate later this afternoon,” NBC 5 Meteorologist Alicia Roman said. As the cold front passes through, that will be the trigger.”
The highest threat window will come to an end around 9 p.m., but that won’t be all.
Daily chances for rain and storms continues Wednesday and Thursday, with temperatures in the 40s Wednesday and rebounding into the 60s by Thursday.
“Scattered thunderstorms will be possible at times Wednesday night through the end of the week along with periods of heavy rain and localized flooding,” the NWS said in an alert.
