Donovan Talks Ivey, Off-Season Implications? Bright Spots in Spurs Loss, and Other Bulls Bullets

A lot happened yesterday, on the hardwood, and definitely off it.

I wouldn’t wish what the Chicago Bulls PR team is dealing with on my worst enemy. Between the Jaden Ivey situation and watching Victor Wembanyama dominate them with zero resistance, it was a rough night all around.

But this might end up being a life raft in disguise, depending on how it shapes Chicago’s offseason.

    Let’s talk Bulls basketball.

© Daniel Dunn-Imagn Images Last night, the Chicago Bulls were dismantled by Victor Wembanyama on national television, and it didn’t take long. He finished with 41 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 blocks, and a steal on elite efficiency. He recorded the fastest double-double since the NBA-ABA merger in just eight minutes, and put up that ridiculous stat line in only 31 minutes of play. Chicago, unfortunately, can’t take any pride in stopping Wemby, because they didn’t. But they can take something from their four-game losing streak, including another impressive performance from Leonard Miller. He dropped a career-high and his first 20+ point game, doing it in just 25 minutes off the bench. He was extremely efficient, going 9-of-14 from the field, and worked relentlessly, grabbing 5 offensive rebounds, dishing out 4 assists, and adding a steal and a block. Miller isn’t just becoming a mainstay for the future, he’s proving to be consistent and reliable, a quality you simply can’t teach. And it only makes it better knowing Chicago still has him on a very team-friendly contract next season before having to pay him what he’s truly worth.

    — Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) March 31, 2026 The next thing a smart front office should be thinking about is how to maximize the smaller contracts on the Bulls’ roster, possibly by making the right moves this offseason. Not an all-in push for contention, but a way to speed up the rebuild. Target young restricted free agents, or bring in solid veterans you can flip for assets at the deadline. Do it smart. Do it right. Bobby Marks of ESPN recently put out an article asking one big question for every lottery team. When he got to the Chicago Bulls, the question was simple: Can the Bulls escape the middle? It’s a great question, but not a new one. He pointed out that Chicago has a real chance to change its trajectory this offseason, with significant cap space opening up, a top-10 pick, potentially another from Portland, and two second-round picks. And I agree, there’s a path here. Especially if they can pry away a young player like Peyton Watson from the Denver Nuggets, or someone in that same mold. One thing they’ve effectively taken off the table, though, is the decision on whether to re-sign Jaden Ivey—and for how much. That gives them flexibility. It means they can realistically walk away from the expiring contracts coming off the books this season and start fresh if they choose to.

The Denver Nuggets may not be able to afford to keep Peyton Watson, per @denverpost “Watson and the Nuggets did not agree to a contract extension before the season, which would’ve tagged him with the same poison-pill provision as Braun. — NBACentral (@TheDunkCentral) December 20, 2025 Speaking of the Jaden Ivey situation, once the Chicago Bulls announced they were waiving him, it was no surprise that questions about him dominated both the pre-game and post-game press conferences. Billy Donovan was one of the first to be asked, and this is what he had to say:

“I had not followed or seen that myself,” said Donovan. “We’re all going to work well together, we’re all going to take care of each other, accept each other. We’re going to be hard-working, accountable, respectful, and professional… I hope for him he’s okay… but organizationally, there are certain standards we want to have and live up to every day.”

    — Jared Weiss (@JaredWeissNBA) March 30, 2026 He also used the moment to speak on mental health as a whole, emphasizing its importance and how the Bulls are trying to support their players:

“I think in this day and age, you have to be conscientious that these guys may be going through things,” Donovan said. “And I’m not passing judgment on what Jaden is or isn’t going through. But I do worry about that—not only for Jaden, but for all of our players. Are we providing the resources? I think we are. If any player reached out and said they need help, we’d be there for them.”

    — Jared Weiss (@JaredWeissNBA) March 30, 2026 Mental health has become an increasingly important topic in the NBA, pushed into the spotlight by players like Kevin Love and former Bull DeMar DeRozan. But it’s clear the league is still working toward a perfect solution. Hopefully, Ivey is doing okay amid everything that’s unfolded, and when the time is right, finds his way back to an opportunity in the NBA. Unfortunately, I don’t see that happening with the Bulls anytime soon.
