2026 International Booker Prize Shortlist Revealed

The 2026 International Booker Prize shortlist has officially been announced, highlighting six books from around the world that explore history, identity, love and survival.

The shortlist includes:

"The Nights Are Quiet in Tehran" by Shida Bazyar. A multigenerational story following an Iranian family through revolution, exile and return, exploring themes of identity, resistance and the search for home."She Who Remains" by Rene Karabash. A poetic coming-of-age novel about a young woman in a patriarchal Albanian society who escapes an arranged marriage by adopting a new identity, setting off a powerful journey of self-discovery."The Director" by Daniel Kehlmann. Inspired by real-life filmmaker G.W. Pabst, this novel examines the moral compromises of working under Nazi rule, blending history with dark, thought-provoking storytelling."On Earth As It Is Beneath" by Ana Paula Maia. Set in a brutal Brazilian penal colony, this haunting novella explores violence, justice and survival in a place where humanity is pushed to its limits."The Witch" by Marie NDiaye. A darkly comic novel about a suburban woman who passes her supernatural abilities to her daughters, weaving together themes of motherhood, power and identity."Taiwan Travelogue" by Yáng Shuāng-zǐ. A layered historical novel following a Japanese writer’s culinary journey through 1930s Taiwan, exploring colonialism, culture and connection through food and memory.

Chosen from a longlist of 13 titles—and originally from 128 submissions—the six books represent authors and translators from eight countries across four continents.

The International Booker Prize honors the best works of fiction translated into English and published in the UK or Ireland, with the £50,000 prize split equally between the author and translator. Each shortlisted title also receives £5,000, divided between both.

This year’s shortlist spans a wide range of settings and themes, transporting readers from 1930s Taiwan to Nazi-era Europe, from suburban France to post-revolution Iran, and from a Brazilian penal colony to the Albanian Alps.

Across the six books, readers will encounter a diverse cast of characters, including a suburban witch, a conflicted filmmaker, a prison warden, a young novelist and a multigenerational family navigating exile and identity.

Five of the six shortlisted authors are women, as are four of the translators, underscoring the global and diverse nature of this year’s selection.

The judging panel, chaired by author Natasha Brown, praised the shortlist for its emotional depth and historical resonance.

“With narratives that capture moments from across the past century, these books reverberate with history,” Brown said. “While there’s heartbreak, brutality and isolation among these stories, their lasting effect is energising.”

The winning book will be announced on May 19, 2026, at a ceremony at Tate Modern in London.
