Wembanyama Burnishes MVP Case as Spurs Paste Bulls 129-114 — March 30, 2026

Rising San Antonio Spurs superstar center Victor Wembanyama is ready for his closeup.

In just his third season, the two-time All-Star has an inside track on this year’s MVP race. With our Chicago Bulls’ frontcourt on life support, Wembanyama made quick work of starting “center” Guerschon Yabusele, who at a listed 6-foot-7 is nine inches shorter than his 7-foot-4 Team France colleague.

In just 30 minutes, Wembanyama scored a whopping 41 points on 17-of-27 shooting from the field (3-of-6 from deep) and 4-of-4 shooting from the charity stripe, while pulling down 16 rebounds, dishing out four dimes, blocking three shots and swiping one steal. He logged +15 plus-minus. Per Jared Weiss of The Athletic, the game marked the fourth 40-point, 15-rebound contest of the 22-year-old’s young career.

Reigning Rookie of the Year Spurs wing Stephon Castle finished just two rebounds shy of a triple-double, logging 21 points, 10 assists, and eight boards — plus a game-high +24.

A Brutal 36-19 Spurs Second Quarter Edge Made The Difference

Fresh off cutting Jaden Ivey in a surprise move, the Bulls kept things close in the first quarter. Chicago trailed San Antonio by a single point, 29-28, heading into the second.

Matas Buzelis continued to show off his improved ability to create with the rock in his hands. Development of Chicago’s core young pieces (Buzelis, Josh Giddey, theoretically Leonard Miller and Rob Dillingham) as the season wraps up is one of the key things that can actually keep fans engaged, so this drive-and-dish to Giddey was nice to behold.

Buzelis also submitted his 17th game this season with three or more blocks. Although the Chicago native’s man-to-man defense can be a little inconsistent, his verticality around the rim is an encouraging sign.

Chicago shot 5-of-10 from distance in that opening frame. But the Bulls went just 8-of-34 from behind the 3-point line the rest of the way. Invariably, the Bulls’ massive disadvantages in size and, well, talent caught up with them. This time, the opponents’ run happened midway through the second frame. Chicago went six minutes without making a single trey in the period.

The game got out of hand thanks to a 26-9 Spurs run to end the second quarter. Chicago’s scoring sputtered to a halt thanks to a blistering Spurs defense. All told, Chicago was outscored 35-19 in the frame.

San Antonio led 64-47 at the break. The young club fully outclassed the Bulls in all facets early, on both ends of the floor. Second-year forward Leonard Miller paced Chicago in the first half with 14 points and five rebounds, en route to a career-high.

It never got particularly close again. The final margin was a deceptively close 129-114, but that was due in part to Mitch Johnson pulling Wembanyama and Castle with 5:34 remaining in the fourth period. The Spurs enjoyed a 65-47 rebounding edge. In the frontcourt, Chicago was missing Nick Richards, Jalen Smith and ex-Spurs big Zach Collins on Monday.

Reserve guard Collin Sexton, hungry to pitch himself to his next team this summer in free agency, did achieve his seventh 20+ point game of the month. But when your team is losing by 20ish points for most of the night and no one’s playing any defense, does that actually matter? After all, someone needs to score.

To that end, Spurs alum Tre Jones paced Chicago with 23 points on a hyper-efficient 9-of-13 shooting from the field and 3-of-3 shooting from the free throw line in just 26 minutes. The contest marked his career-most sixth contest scoring 15 or more points. Miller logged a career-high 21 points while shooting 9-of-14 from the field (3-of-8 from beyond the arc).

On the “lowlights” end of the action, Patrick Williams went a miserable 0-for-7 from the field, but connected on his two foul shots for a grand total of two points. Keep in mind, he was out there for 21 minutes, including plenty of garbage time during which he could’ve padded his stats.

The victory marked San Antonio’s ninth straight, the franchise’s 14th of its last 15, and its 25th of their last 27 bouts. Not too shabby. The Spurs improve to 57-18 on the year, just two games behind Alex Caruso’s 59-16 Oklahoma City Thunder.

The now 29-46 Bulls conclude their current road trip with a paltry 0-4 record, which is good news for our draft chances (we’re now a half-game ahead of Milwaukee again in the Tankathon reverse standings) but bad news for our watchability. Chicago now heads home for a Wednesday clash against the 17-win Indiana Pacers, who have somehow beaten the Bulls three times this season.
