Retired WWE Star Tapped to Host WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas

You can't see him. But you will again very soon.

John Cena is heading back to WWE, just months after retiring from in-ring competition. The 48-year-old confirmed on March 30 that he will host WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas on April 18 and 19.

Cena made the announcement in a video posted to X from the set of his upcoming Netflix movie One Attempt Remaining. "Ah, retired life in the sun," he joked before revealing his real reason for being near Vegas. "There's a road to WrestleMania going on, and Hollywood is really close to Vegas. Rumor around this town is WrestleMania needs a host. Well, I'm already on that road."

He finished with his signature "You can't see me" hand gesture before adding, "I will see you at WrestleMania."

Since retirement, my “road” has looked a little different… but now I can officially say I’m headed to WrestleMania!!!! See you in Las Vegas! pic.twitter.com/nyNypOhRpk

The hosting gig comes just months after Cena's emotional farewell from the ring. His final match in December was a loss to Gunther after just 24 minutes, a finish that left some longtime fans disappointed. Cena had announced his retirement at Money in the Bank in July 2024 after more than two decades as one of WWE's biggest stars.

But even then, Cena made it clear he wasn't walking away from the company entirely. "WWE is my home and I love it. Just because I physically feel I'm at my end doesn't mean I need to distance myself from something I love," he said at a press conference following the announcement. "I look forward to being a member of the WWE extended family for quite some time."

What to Expect at WrestleMania 42

The two-day event takes place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on April 18 and 19. While Cena's role is officially as host, fans are already speculating about whether he could get physical. When Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson hosted WrestleMania 27, he ended up in a confrontation that set up one of the biggest matches in WWE history. Whether Cena follows a similar path remains to be seen.

Cena, who has said his marriage toShay Shariatzadehinspired his decision to step away, has stayed busy outside the ring with his acting career. In addition to One Attempt Remaining for Netflix, he is also known for the Peacemaker series on Max and has signed a five-year ambassador deal with WWE.
