Trooper kills armed suspect after 2 burned cars with bodies found in Lewis County

DIANA, N.Y. — A man was shot and killed by New York State Police troopers Thursday afternoon after he opened fire on officers during a tense confrontation in Lewis County.

State Police say troopers were responding to a reported trespass on Alpine Road in the Town of Diana Thursday afternoon.

While heading to the call, troopers found a burned car with human remains inside. A second burned car, also with remains, was later found in the same area.

Investigators traced it to a nearby home, where the suspect, identified as Victor Craighead, later came out armed with a long gun and opened fire on police.

Trooper Timothy Dovi returned fire, killing the suspect. State Police say Dovi, who has been a member of the NYSP for over nine yeas, is currently on critical incident leave.

State Police say multiple body-worn cameras captured the incident, but it isn’t being released yet due to the ongoing investigation.

Autopsies related to the human remains found will be done Monday at the Broome County Medical Examiner’s Office in Binghamton.

    The investigation remains ongoing.
