The head of the Arab Foundation for Development and Strategic Studies, Brigadier General Samir Ragheb, has warned that the US-Israeli war on Iran could last for years, pointing to wars that began as operations lasting only a few weeks but continued for years such as the Russian-Ukrainian war.
During a Sunday phone interview with Amr Adib on the “al-Hekaya” show, Ragheb explained that if the situation continues without any major change, such as through the overthrow of the Iranian regime by war or through internal action, then the conflict could last for years given complexities of the landscape and the intertwining of international interests in the region.
He added that any future military escalation could move towards a war on the ground, but this depends on finding suitable territory for troop deployment, given the complexities of the regional landscape.
Iraq is among the leading candidates for the deployment of US ground forces, he explained, particularly in the southern regions, given the nature and capabilities of the US military.
Unforeseen Consequences
The military expert explained that the entry of US forces deep into Iranian territory presents a significant challenge, indicating that this scenario may not be viable on the ground, given the complexities of the geography and the nature of the confrontation.
He pointed out that any large-scale incursion could lead to unforeseen consequences, including the potential collapse or disintegration of the Iranian state and the emergence of armed militias within it, which could open the door to a period of chaos and instability throughout the entire region.
He added that the Iranian side no longer trusts the course of negotiations with the US and no longer relies on them to resolve its strategic issues.
Ragheb explained that Iran might resort to effective economic pressure tactics, such as threatening navigation in the Strait of Hormuz or targeting Gulf states.
