SGA Senate passes block seating changes and food drive act

The SGA Senate approved student organization seating changes Thursday night, along with a move-out food drive for the West Alabama Food Bank, a constitutional election change and two revisions to the SGA Code of Laws.

The biggest item on the docket was B-10-26, a bill changing student organization seating procedures.

Anna Beth Frazier, a senator from the Barefield College of Arts and Sciences, said the current process had “become outdated” and no longer reflected “the most consistent and appropriate practices.”

“The current process relies on subjective interpretation, without sufficient consideration of organizational differences or preferences,” Frazier said.

She said the bill would give student organizations more say in their seating preferences through an updated scoring system. Organizations would be scored based on GPA, presentations and community involvement, with higher ranked groups choosing preferred seating locations first. The bill also adds clearer penalties for conduct issues and for not filling blocks during the season.

    The bill passed unanimously.

Senators also passed Constitutional Amendment C-02-26, which will allow constitutional amendments to appear on special election ballots instead of only on the spring SGA general election.

Madelyn Herwig, a senator from the Culverhouse College of Business, said the change would “allow for a second voting time to happen” for constitutional amendments.

The Senate also passed B-09-26, a bill removing the executive secretary position from the SGA Code of Laws.

Katherine Steel, a senator from the Barefield College of Arts and Sciences, said the role is no longer a position in the SGA and that its duties would be shifted to the chief of staff and executive vice president.

A-03-26, an act adding a food drive for the West Alabama Food Bank to SGA’s Another Person’s Treasure initiative, was also approved.

The act will function during move-out in collaboration with the Business Honors Program. It will also place collection boxes in residence halls during move-out for any unopened, nonperishable food items.

In new business, senators passed B-11-26, a bill revising parts of the SGA Code of Laws dealing with conduct procedures and membership standards.

The measure updates disciplinary notification rules and clarifies the roles of the attorney general and Judicial Board. It also says elected SGA members, paid members and Executive Council members must allow the Office of Judicial Affairs to notify the attorney general and SGA staff administrator of disciplinary action taken during their term.

Steel said the bill would make sure violations are handled “through the proper channels.”
