The Diamond Heels scored 34 total runs across a three-game sweep at No. 23 Notre Dame during the weekend. It’s the second road sweep this season for UNC, which is now 7-0 in road games.
The two teams played a doubleheader Saturday after Friday’s opening game was postponed. A back-and-forth Game 1 saw the teams tied at 1-1 in the first inning, 2-2 in the fourth and 3-3 in the sixth. The Fighting Irish gave themselves some breathing room with a pair of runs in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead, but UNC answered in the eighth after Erik Paulsen singled and then reached third base with two outs. Colin Hynek drove Paulsen in with a double, and Hynek would come around to score the tying run on a single from Tyler Howe in the next at-bat.
Cooper Nicholson kept the rally going with a single to advance Howe to second, and both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch to Rom Kellis. Kellis eventually drew a walk, and ball four was another wild pitch to bring Howe home from third base. Freshman reliever Caden Glauber entered the game in the bottom of the inning and recorded the game’s final six outs, stranding a runner on second in the eighth and a runner on third in the ninth. UNC took the opener 6-5.

Carolina scored first again in the nightcap of the doubleheader after Paulsen drove in Gavin Gallaher in the first inning, but Notre Dame answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame against UNC starter Ryan Lynch. Carolina eventually tied the game after runs in the second and third, then took a 5-3 lead when an Owen Hull single brought home Gallaher and Paulsen in the fourth.
The Irish tied the game at 5-5 with two runs in the fifth before Carolina blew the game open with six runs in the sixth. A one-out Gallaher single set the table for Paulsen again, who drove Gallaher home with a double to put UNC in front once again. Paulsen advanced to third on a Macon Winslow single, then came home himself on a fielder’s choice. Carolina was far from done, as Hynek doubled home Winslow to score its eighth run. Howe then walked to bring up Cooper Nicholson, who launched the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for a three-run home run. UNC led 11-5.

Two more runs scored in the seventh off a double from Hull, and that was more than enough cushion for the UNC bullpen. Lynch was pulled after allowing five runs in just 4.2 innings, but Walker McDuffie and Camron Seagraves combined to record the final 10 outs while allowing only three hits. Carolina took Saturday’s second game, 13-7.
Going for the sweep Sunday, the Diamond Heels would once again be paced by the offense. UNC trailed 3-1 after an inning, then 7-4 after three as starting pitcher Folger Boaz recorded just seven outs and allowed two home runs. The score stayed that way until the fifth, when Carolina put together another game-changing rally.
The first four batters of the inning all reached, as a walk and three singles brought home two UNC runs and cut the deficit to 7-6. Two more singles and a double from Jake Schaffner kept the line moving, and Schaffner came around to score from second base after a Notre Dame fielding error on a pickoff attempt. Carolina had scored eight runs in total in the fifth with just one extra-base hit.

Schaffner was at it again in the ninth inning with the score 12-10 in favor of UNC. A ground-rule double was part of a three-run rally to give Carolina breathing room entering the bottom of the frame. Glauber had no trouble this time, working around a two-out double to retire the side and clinch the three-game sweep, 15-10.
UNC has now scored at least six runs in five consecutive games, a streak which ironically started following a 2-0 shutout loss. The weekend also marked the first time Carolina had scored at least 10 runs twice in an ACC series. The Diamond Heels are now 24-4-1 overall and 9-3 in conference play, having won 8 of their last 9 ACC contests. UNC will return home Tuesday when it hosts Campbell at Boshamer Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m. ACC play will continue starting Thursday when Boston College visits for a three-game series.
