Day 69 of the Chicago Bears offseason. It seems like today would make for a good day to unload the notebook so we can start Monday with a clean slate.
We are less than one month away from the NFL Draft opening its doors. In fact, we are 28 days away from writing our Sunday post-draft reactions post. With that in mind, I am ready to ramp up our mock draft coverage at BN. For me, that means mock draft roundups from insiders and pundits around the league. And for Patrick and Matt, it means you’ll see more mock drafts in the coming days and weeks. Ultimately, for you, it means that you should brace yourselves for posts about players and prospects Matt, Patrick, and I like as fits for the Bears. This is a fun time of the year, so let’s act like it. A CBS Sports 2026 NFL Mock Draft by Josh Edwards features some mock trades that shake things up. But when it comes to the Bears, Edwards has the team staying put and taking Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods:Peter Woods was once regarded as a potential top 5 overall selection. Although I never saw him as a clear and obvious blue-chip talent, this is good value for the Clemson product and fills a need for the Bears.

© Ken Ruinard / staff / USA TODAY NETWORK NFL Media analyst Bucky Brooks has the Bears going with a defensive player in the 3.0 version of his mock draft. But instead of taking someone who could bolster the trenches, Brooks has Chicago shoring up the secondary with the selection of safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren. The University of Toledo product is described by Brooks as “an enticing safety prospect with a rare combination of skills as a center fielder and box-area bandit.” When you consider how Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen tends to deploy his safety tandem in a way where both players need to play well in coverage and in the box, then you can understand why various mock drafts have Chicago selecting a safety in Round 1. Alyssa Barbieri (Bears Wire) has a seven-round mock draft that addresses the team’s biggest needs. Here are the picks: Round 1, Pick 25: Peter Woods, Clemson defensive tackle Round 2, Pick 57: A.J. Haulcy, LSU safety Round 2, Pick 60: Sam Hecht, Kansas State center Round 3, Pick 89: LT Overton, Alabama EDGE Round 4, Pick 129: Taurean York, Texas A&M linebacker Round 7, Pick 238: Kaden Wetjen, Iowa wide receiver Round 7, Pick 240: Josh Moten, Southern Miss cornerbackBN BEARS ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Facebook | Twitter | BlueSky
As I said on the most recent installment of the Bleacher Nation Bears podcast, I would be genuinely surprised if the team makes picks with the 57th and 60th picks. My gut tells me that one (possibly both) selections will be moved in trades. If Bears GM Ryan Poles plays his cards right, he can pick up some draft capital on Day 3 (and in 2027), and still get someone his scouts like while trading back a few spots. It might be a tough needle to thread, but the juice could be worth the squeeze. This is (1) neat and (2) hopefully the first step toward Austin Reed getting another shot at somebody’s training camp when the NFL starts gearing up for its 2026 season:Former Bears backup QB Austin Reed went 26/40, 376 passing yards, 3 passing TDs, and 0 INTs for the Dallas Renegades today.[image or embed]

Gone, but not forgotten: Wide receiver Adam Thielen and fullback C.J. Ham signed retirement deals with the Minnesota Vikings. I don’t like saying nice things about rivals. However, I respect what Thielen and Ham did as competitors on the field. They were worthy foes and a constant annoyance whenver they squared off against the Bears. I’m happy to see they won’t be a thorn in our side ever again. It sounds like the Detroit Lions moving All-Pro Penei Sewell from right tackle to left tackle is on the table. “I think that’s the beauty of having a player like him,” said Detroit GM Brad Holmes on the Lions Collective podcast. “You always have the flexibility of the possibility of him playing left tackle. He’s done it before. It’s not anything foreign to him. So, even as we’re going through free agency, we weren’t really pigeonholed like, ‘We’ve got to get a left tackle. We’ve got to get a right tackle.’ We were just like, ‘What’s the best tackle for us?’ And then we’ll kind of adjust as needed. So that’s kind of the beauty of it.” Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love is pleased to see the return of Matt LaFleur as the team’s head coach. “Being able to keep Matt around is awesome, and I’m very happy about that,” Love told Kyle Malzahn of WFRV (h/t Pro Football Talk). “It’s a lot to learn a whole new system and new terminology. As a quarterback, being in the same system, the same terminology, it definitely helps me out.” © Mark Hoffman / Milwaukee Journal Sentinel / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images The mere thought of another Tom Brady coneback ruffled feathers in the NFL. “They didn’t like it very much,” Brady said in an interview with CNBC. “We explored a lot of different things, and I’m very happily retired.” Sure, Brady might be “very happily retired” right now, but h elooks like he can still sling it. If the Raiders had a worthwhile offensive line, I’d suggest something silly like having Brady play an on-field mentorship role for Fernando Mendoza after the Heisman-winning Indiana quarterback becomes the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. But I’d fear that Brady would be at risk of serious injury with the line in its current state. In a letter sent to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Florida’s attorney general demands the league abolishes the Rooney Rule. “The Rooney Rule and its offshoots are illegal in Florida,” writes James Uthmeier in his letter to the league. Clearly, someone (Uthmeier) does not know the Rooney Rule, its history, or its intent. With that being said, Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney II, the chairman of the NFL’s Diversity , Equity, and Inclusion Committee — whose father, Dan Rooney is the rule’s namesake — believes the league has an obligation to look into this matter. Rooney’s statement to ESPN:“There’s no question that the environment has changed in recent years. We do have an obligation to make sure that our policies comply with the laws, whatever the law is, and whatever the changes in law might be. We’ve got to look at that and make sure we’re in compliance. … When the league’s lawyers have a chance to analyze it to determine what is it about Florida law that the attorney general is questioning, we’ll have to review that. That’s just the environment we’re existing in today.”
That is an irksome statement. Because while I feel that the Rooney Rule needs tweaks, throwing the baby out with the bathwater has never been a good way of conducting the business of change. We’ll see what comes of this (and other NFL happenings) when the league meetings oopen this week.MORE BEARS FROM BLEACHER NATION: Go Ad-Free | Subscribe to the BN Newsletter
