Kim Novak, 93, Says Biopic Actress Is Totally Wrong to Play Her

Kim Novak has thoughts about Scandalous, and she’s letting them be known.

The upcoming biopic, directed by Euphoria alum Coleman Domingo and starring The Housemaid’s Sydney Sweeney as Novak, explores the short-lived affair between Novak and Sammy Davis Jr., to be played by Alien: Romulus’ David Jonsson.

Sharing her disdain for casting choice of Sweeney, the Picnic star spoke with the Times of London yesterday, March 28, saying that Sweeney is “totally wrong” to play her.

“Sydney Sweeney looks sexy all the time,” she said. “She could never play me,” adding that Sweeney “sticks out so much above the waist.”

Novak said she’s also worried the film will focus too much on the salacious and sexual aspects of her relationship with the legendary musician.

“There’s no way it wouldn’t be a sexual relationship because Sydney Sweeney looks sexy all the time. She was totally wrong to play me,” Novak said, adding she and Davis were more than just sex; they had “so much in common.”

Back in August, Novak shared more with The Guardian about her relationship and how the film, which has apparently stalled in production, might be getting her story wrong.

“I don’t think the relationship was scandalous," she said. "He’s somebody I really cared about. We had so much in common, including that we need to be accepted for who we are and what we do, rather than how we look. But I’m concerned they’re going to make it all sexual reasons.”

Novak and Davis began their romance in 1957 after meeting on the set of The Steven Allen Show. According to Smithsonian Magazine, their first date involved spaghetti and meatballs, and their affair got more serious with every naysayer's reaction.

“She hadn’t thought about me anymore than I had thought about her—until it was forbidden,” Davis wrote in his autobiography Sammy, per SM. “Then we became conspirators, drawn together by the single thing we had in common: defiance.”

The pair’s relationship was reportedly broken up by Columbia Pictures’ bossman Henry Cohn, who thought the interracial factor would be bad for business. They kept their relationship under wraps for the most part but succumbed to pressure from Cohn who reportedly threatened Davis with mob violence.

At the 2025 Met Gala, Sweeney was getting into character with a look that paid homage to the Vertigo star. Taking to the iconic steps, Sweeney wore a peekaboo dress similar to the number Novak wore in The Legend of Lylah Clare (1967).

Speaking with People last October, Sweeney said she’s “incredibly honored” to play Novak. “I think her story is still very relevant today in that she dealt with Hollywood and scrutiny with her relationships and her own private life and the control of her image. And I think that for me, I relate to it in a lot of different ways.”
