Thousands of “No Kings” protests are slated to take place Saturday across the United States, including dozens in the Chicago area, as demonstrators voice opposition to the Trump administration’s policies.
Events planned in the Chicago area, including a large demonstration at Grand Park, are part of a nationwide action, with organizers expecting millions to turn out across the country.
“As President Trump escalates his attempts to control us, it is on us, the people, to show that we will fight to protect one another and our country. If he believes we will roll over and allow him to take our freedoms, he is mistaken. We are coming together again on March 28 because we know we can overcome this repression when we unite,” the “No Kings” website stated.
At least five of “No Kings” events are planned within the city of Chicago, including in Grant Park, Edgewater and Lakeview. Family-friendly “No Kings” events are scheduled at Independence Park in the Irving Park neighborhood and Welles Park in Lincoln Square.
The Grant Park protest, which is expected to be the largest local gathering, is set to begin at 1:30 p.m.
Saturday’s protests will mark the third round of such demonstrations, following “No Kings” actions in October and June.
Thousands turned out for over 30 “No Kings” events held across the Chicago area in October, adding to the nearly 7 million people who attended events across the country. In June, organizers estimated roughly 5 million people protested across the country in “No Kings” demonstrations.
“This administration’s actions are angering not just Democratic voters or folks in big blue city centers — they are crossing a line for people in red and rural areas, in the suburbs, all over the country,” said Leah Greenberg, the other co-executive director of Indivisible. “The defining story of this Saturday’s mobilization is not just how many people are protesting, but where they are protesting,”
Organizers predict the protests could amount to one of the largest demonstrations in U.S. history. Over 3,100 events have been registered in all 50 states, with more than 9 million people expected to participate.
And organizers designated the rally at the Minnesota Capitol in St. Paul as the national flagship event, in recognition of how the state where federal agents fatally shot two people who were monitoring Trump’s immigration crackdown became an epicenter of resistance.
The most recent “No Kings” protests took place in October, as Chicago emerged at the forefront of controversial immigration enforcement operations and a legal debate over the deployment of National Guard troops in the city.
This weekend’s protests are likely to focus on Trump’s economic policies, the ongoing war in Iran and again on immigration enforcement.
Rolling street closures will be put into effect downtown Chicago and near Grant Park amid the rally and march, according to the city’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications.
Protests are also planned for several suburban areas, including but not limited to:
