We made it! We’re past the start-stop of game one and the subsequent off day, and can now settle in fully to Cubs baseball with 10 games in the next 11 days. The Triple-A baseball season has also begun, so there’s plenty to get to ahead of today’s game two of the three-game season-opening series against the Nationals.
The Iowa Cubs had an impressive season-opening win at Principal Park in Des Moines last night, defeating the Columbus Clippers (Cleveland’s AAA affiliate), 5-2. Javier Assad got the start for the I-Cubs and finished 3.0IP, 3H, 0ER, 3BB, 5K. Relievers Charlie Barnes (3.0IP) and Collin Snider (1.2IP) also provided scoreless outings from the bullpen, and first baseman Johnathan Long picked up where he left off in 2025, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI and two walks.Jonathon Long in the Iowa Cubs season opener:Walk104.5 mph singleWalk100.5 mph singleGroundoutThe 2025 Cubs Minor League POTY picked up right where he left off with some hard contact and a pair of walks. pic.twitter.com/ibTOG1YTys
— Carson Wolf (@TheWrigleyWire) March 28, 2026 An encouraging debut for the pitching depth at Triple-A last night with Assad, Barnes, Ryan Rolison, and Snider combining to strike out 17. Will Sanders — discussed in the bullets last weekend after his start in a Spring Breakout Game — starts tonight for the I-Cubs, while the much-anticipated 2026 debut of Jaxon Wiggins is set to begin at 1:08 CDT Sunday. When Cubs pitching prospect Jaxon Wiggins got to Triple-A last season, he was under an extremely tight pitch count. Now that Wiggins is healthy, he's ready to be unleased. t.co/IfsXRW3R4l
— Tommy Birch (@TommyBirch) March 27, 2026 Our new teammate, Tony Andracki, provided ‘The Top-5 Questions of the 2026 Cubs Season (Following Opening Day)’, and along with encouraging anyone who hasn’t to give it a read, the story also got me thinking about how we all deal with an Opening Day loss. From a human nature standpoint, I think it more than anything provokes over-analyzing the bad, or what could be bad, as opposed to looking past it and focusing on the good within an Opening Day win. Like anything in life, I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing if done in moderation, so I say all that to say what I’m left with from Opening Day is some concern for Matthew Boyd, given the post-All-Star break struggles he had last season and unspectacular spring training. Combine the Boyd concern with what we’ve seen most recently from Shota Imanaga and Jameson Taillon, and after just one game here (we?) I am (thinks of Michael Scott and that episode of The Office). The Top 5 Questions of the 2026 Cubs Season (Following Opening Day) ICYMI, after Michael got the scoop and broke the Nico Hoerner extension news, we got the details on the six-year contract yesterday. The annual $22.5 million CBT hit is what stands out most to me. Feels like a more than manageable number to have on the books, especially considering all the money set to come off the payroll after this season. BREAKING: The Nico Hoerner Extension Details Are Here! Brett and Michael released a new episode of the BN Cubs Podcast yesterday (via Apple, via Spotify), and there’s no doubt in my mind that in nearly every competitive game a team plays this season, there’s going to be a debate about what should or should not have happened concerning an ABS challenge. The Cubs whiffed on a couple of ABS challenges yesterday. Were they too conservative or is it too early to say?Episode 55 of the BN Cubs Podcast is presented by @ankinlaw Apple: t.co/BPhCqS0RMiSpotify: t.co/wchDOc7PW4 pic.twitter.com/j2ULQbowbo
