Before Death in Paradise season 15 arrived on screens, we were introduced to a new character – and Ginny Holder's replacement – Sergeant Mattie Fletcher, who Don Gilet teased would come with "a little bit of baggage".
"There's more to her than meets the eye," he added, though exactly what he meant was kept firmly under wraps.
The picture began to take shape in the opening episode, when Mattie was called into Selwyn's office over her "reckless" behaviour during an investigation. It was revealed that an incident during her time working in Jamaica had been noted in her employment file – though the details remained unclear.
She also confided in Seb that she had "messed up on a case big time" in her previous role, and mentioned a boyfriend she had broken up with before coming to Saint Marie – but again, she offered no specifics.
But in the season 15 finale, it emerged that those two aspects of her life are connected.
While working on the investigation into the death of Giles Parry, whose body was found out at sea, her old boss from Jamaica attempts to contact her. But Mattie keeps dodging his calls, given her reluctance to confront a part of her life she's tried so hard to distance herself from.
It then emerges that he's also contacted the commissioner, who takes it upon himself to deliver troubling news: her ex-boyfriend Damon has been acquitted on all counts and is now a free man.
Clearly shaken by the development, Mattie tells Selwyn she doesn't want the wider team to know the full extent of her story, and he agrees to keep her secret.
But it's not going to stay under wraps for long...

After the case is solved and Selwyn receives praise from the community for uncovering what really happened to Benjamin Parry – long believed to have drowned, but in fact murdered – Seb takes a diverted call from the station. It's Damon.
He had left his number – which the officer had scribbled on a slip of paper – and asked Mattie to give him a call. But when her colleague's back was turned, she quickly scrunched up the note and through it into a nearby bin.
If only she could do the same with her ex...
It's not yet clear whether there's more to uncover about their past relationship – the possibility of domestic abuse doesn't feel out of the question. But whether he's simply chaos incarnate or threatens something far more sinister, season 16 looks set to be a challenging chapter for Mattie.
But, as actor Catherine Garton said when introducing her character, she's "tenacious… she's very determined".
"She has something to prove to herself and to others… it comes from a place of passion," she added.
Plus, she has her new team around her, who are fiercely loyal to one another – as seen when Selwyn backed Mattie after a suspect alleged she had propositioned him.
Whatever Damon has planned, he may have met his match.
