Senate approves TSA funding: Why Rochester’s airport wasn’t impacted and House vote preview

WASHINGTON — After going 42 days without pay amid a partial government shutdown, Transportation Security Administration agents could finally see paychecks again.

The Senate unanimously approved funding early Friday morning for most Homeland Security agencies, including TSA. The House is expected to consider the deal on Friday. There’s no deal yet on funding for immigration enforcement operations.

The partial government shutdown led to massive lines at multiple airports, as thousands of TSA agents called out, but not at the Rochester airport. That’s because Rochester TSA agents get their checks from a private contractor, VMD Corp, rather than directly from the Department of Homeland Security.

On the other hand, major airports aren’t under contract with private companies, leading to TSA agents walking out. One traveler told News10NBC last week that Newark International Airport in New Jersey was a “madhouse” compared to Rochester.

During the partial shutdown, the Trump administration sent ICE agents to help with security screening at some major airports. Some travelers have expressed concerns about ICE’s presence creating tension and deterring people from flying. Last week, Rochester airport director Andy Moore said there were no current plans to send ICE to the Rochester airport.

When will the House vote on the deal?

Local Congressional representatives Joe Morelle and Claudia Tenney will soon have a say on the deal to fund Homeland Security. Just like the Senate, Republicans hold the majority in the House, so its passage will almost certainly require bipartisan support.

If the House passes the funding package, President Donald Trump would need to sign it into law. Senators worked through the night on the deal that would fund TSA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Coast Guard, and Customs.

Which other airports have contracted TSA workers?

At least 20 airports across the U.S. have TSA workers employed by private companies, rather than getting checks directly from the government. Here’s the list according to CNN:

Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport Atlantic City International Airport, New Jersey Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County Airport, California Dawson Community Airport, Montana Great Falls International Airport, Montana Glacier Park International Airport, Montana Havre City-County Airport, Montana Kansas City International Airport, Missouri L.
