CHURCHVILLE, N.Y. (WHEC) — A Churchville-Chili High School diver is making waves both in the pool and in the classroom as he prepares for a future in aerospace engineering.

“As much as it is a physical aspect, it’s a very mental sport,” Thomas said. “Having the fear of hitting the water, hitting the board.”
Ricky Krebs, Thomas’ coach, saw the natural talent immediately.
“No background in diving,” Krebs said. “Kind of was like hey I want to try something. Stuck him on the board and he just had a natural talent for it.”
Thomas qualified for states as a sophomore and again as a junior. He was named the Monroe County Diver of the Year in 2026.
“Seeing what I’ve accomplished, it shows what you can do in a sport, anybody can do and further later in life it shows me I can achieve anything I put my mind to,” Thomas said.
The mental discipline required for diving aligns with Thomas’ academic goals. He plans to study aerospace engineering in college.
“Build rockets, build space ships, that’d be my main goal,” Thomas said. “It really came from taking my physics classes, talking to my teachers, seeing what I like to do. I know I like science and math.”
Thomas acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed confidence in his ability to succeed.
“It seems like it’s going to be a hill to climb, for sure,” Thomas said. “I think if I put my mind to it and I really budget my time while I focus at school I can get through it.”
Krebs praised Thomas’ work ethic and determination.
“Not only meeting what he needs to do, but excelling at it,” Krebs said. “I think that will work very well for him in college. When things get tough, he is the type of athlete who will buckle down and do it to the best of his ability even when he is struggling.”
