With the threat of severe weather growing, a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for parts of the Chicago area.
According to the National Weather Service, the watch will be in effect for LaSalle, Grundy, Will and Kankakee counties in Illinois, along with Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Newton and Jasper counties in Indiana.
Large hail and damaging winds are the main threats with the storms, with wind gusts up to 65 miles per hour and hail over two inches in diameter.
There is also a limited flooding risk well south of Interstate 80.
According to the latest discussions from the NWS, peak intensity for those tornadoes could pack winds of 100-to-130 miles per hour, with gusty winds and very large hail possible as well.
Parts of the Chicago area were at an “enhanced” risk of severe storms on Thursday, with a cold front beginning to push toward the area. That front has dropped temperatures significantly in Chicago and other locations, but it remains very warm and humid in areas south of Interstate 80 and across northern Indiana.
Those conditions could be ideal for the formation of strong-to-severe thunderstorms, with some supercells capable of producing gusty winds, tornadoes and large hail, which could be two inches or more in diameter, according to forecast models.
Once those storms move out of the area, significantly colder weather is expected behind the front, with blustery winds and temps in the 30s and 40s on Friday.
