A cold front surging across the Chicago area sent temperatures plunging in just minutes for many.
The lake-enhanced front started to move in during the late morning hours, but continued spreading inland as several suburbs reported major temperature drops.
The National Weather Service noted that in Romeoville, temps dropped “about 10 degree in 10 minutes.”
“If you’re heading out early this afternoon, bring a jacket! You’ll need it later!” the agency wrote on social media.
Chicago’s Midway and O’Hare Airports reported temperature drops of 15 degrees in 20 minutes, according to NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack.
At Wrigley Field, where the Chicago Cubs were holding their home opener, those inside the ballpark reported winds of change that quickly shifted temperatures.
The cold front is considered a “back-door front” because it comes down Lake Michigan, rather than approaching from the northwest, Sack said.
While not uncommon for this time of year, the dramatic drops are often startling.
The cold arrived ahead of a line of storms that threatened to bring potentially damaging storms to parts of the region.
The greatest chance of severe weather will be south of I-88 and the I-290 corridors, the NWS said.
According to the Storm Prediction Center, areas further south of Chicago, including Kankakee County in Illinois and Newton and Jasper Counties in Indiana will be under an “enhanced risk” for severe storms, which ranks as level three of five. There, damaging, golf ball-sized hail is possible, along with damaging winds and even a few tornadoes.
Still, the rest of the region is under either a “slight” or “marginal” risk level.
