The Trump administration is launching investigations into racial discrimination in the admissions policies of three major medical schools, including UC San Diego, the New York Times reported on Thursday.
The inquiry seeks to obtain information about the schools’ applicants from the past seven years including test scores, home ZIP codes and familial relations to alumni or ties to university donors. The government is requiring that the universities submit any internal messages about diversity, equity and inclusion, as well as any communications about admissions policies between school officials and pharmaceutical companies.
If these demands are not met by April 24, the administration said the schools, including Stanford University and Ohio State, would risk losing essential federal funding.
According to Forbes, UC San Diego ranked 13th among research universities that received the most funding from the National Institutes of Health in 2025. Stanford, which is also under investigation, ranked eighth.
In letters obtained by the New York Times that informed the universities of the investigation Wednesday, Harmeet K. Dhillon, the Justice Department’s assistant attorney general for civil rights wrote, “At this time, our investigation will focus on possible race discrimination in medical school admissions.”
During previous investigations of racial discrimination the Trump administration’s approach has tended to focus on white applicants, coinciding with the Supreme Court’s controversial interpretation of civil rights law which effectively ended affirmative action in 2023.
