The 2nd night of competition is here and it sure was a fast prelims session. After breaking Caeleb Dressel’s NCAA record in the 100 fly, Florida’s Josh Liendo has the chance to lower the record once again. Liendo swam to a 42.54 in prelims. He is the defending champion in the event as well, making him a strong favorite. Hubert Kos of Texas entered the meet as the #37 seed but blasted a 42.97 in prelims to win his heat by a second and a half. He will be in a much stronger heat tonight. Michigan’s Tyler Ray had the 3rd fastest swim of the morning with a lifetime best 43.32.

After a 10th place finish in the 1650 free yesterday, Cal freshman Ryan Erisman touched as the top seed in the 400 IM with a 3:36.09 to drop 2.85 seconds off his entry time. It looks to be a good battle between Erisman and defending champion Rex Maurer of Texas as Maurer swam a 3:36.46 this morning. Maurer was the #6 seed entering today with a 3:36.74. Top seed coming into the event Baylor Nelson of Texas will also be in the final tonight after a 3:36.88, the 6th fastest swim of the morning.

Tennessee’s Koby Bujak-Upton led the team’s 800 free relay off yesterday in a 1:29.79 and posted the top time of prelims with a 1:30.67. Tomas Navikonis of Ohio State swam the #2 time of the morning with a 1:30.77. Stanford junior Henry McFadden had a strong anchor leg last night on the team’s 800 free relay to earn the Cardinal 2nd place. McFadden swam the 3rd fastest time of the morning with a 1:30.81 and returns to the ‘A’ final after he was 8th last year in a 1:31.45.

Nate Germonprez of Texas was sub-50 this morning in the 100 breast with a 49.80. The Texas junior has been a strong front runner in the event all season and was 3rd last year in a 50.29. Freshman teammate Campbell McKean was 2nd this morning in a 50.36, dropping 0.01 off his lifetime best. 7th place finisher a year ago Yamato Okadome of Cal was 3rd this morning with a 50.48 but has been as fast as a 50.32.

The 200 free relay will feature the top eight teams. Arizona State is the top seed with a 1:12.98, a time that sits as the #3 relay all-time. They are the top seed by over a second as NC State is the #2 seed with a 1:14.02. Texas swam the top time of prelims with a 1:14.40, a time that would have made them the #3 seed entering the meet.
