Egypt is currently grappling with one of its most severe weather events in years as a “heavy” polar depression dominates the region.
National carrier EgyptAir issued an urgent advisory to passengers on Thursday, as torrential rains and flash flood warnings disrupted daily life and forced a nationwide suspension of schools and universities.
In response to the logistical challenges posed by the storm, EgyptAir has mandated that passengers arrive at the airport significantly earlier than usual to avoid missing flights due to road congestion and visibility issues.
International travelers are required to be present at departure halls four hours prior to takeoff, while domestic passengers must arrive three hours in advance.
The current instability, which began intensifying late Tuesday, reached its peak on Wednesday and is expected to continue through Thursday.
A ‘rare and powerful’ occurrence
The head of the Climate Information Center at the Ministry of Agriculture, Mohamed Fahim, described the depression as a rare and powerful meteorological event.
According to Fahim, the “real strike” of this polar system has transformed standard rainfall into localized flooding, accompanied by heavy thunder and significant hail.
The Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) reported that heavy thunderstorms and hail have already battered the northern coast and Delta governorates, including Alexandria, Matrouh, and Dakahlia.
The situation is more severe in the Sinai Peninsula, the Red Sea mountains, and the Gulf of Suez, where rainfall has escalated into full-scale flash floods.
Meanwhile, Greater Cairo and the Suez Canal cities are experiencing moderate to heavy rainfall that is expected to intensify throughout the day.
Beyond the precipitation, the EMA warned of high-velocity winds reaching up to 50 km/h.
In the Western Desert and Upper Egypt, these winds are triggering sandstorms that have reduced horizontal visibility to less than 1,000 meters, creating hazardous driving conditions and increasing the sensation of extreme cold.
