Sigma Phi Epsilon launches GoFundMe for house worker Katelin Flemmons, Staff Writer

Members of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity launched a GoFundMe called “Help Mrs. Keisha with Car Repair Costs” on March 12. The fundraiser has since closed.

Keisha Snyder, a beloved kitchen worker at their house, had arrived late one morning after her car engine blew up on the way to work.

“She showed up late to the house one day for a meal, and as we were talking to her, she said that her engine blew up,” said Dylan Ayers, vice president of philanthropy of Sigma Phi Epsilon. “Since then, she’s been getting rides from someone else to get to work. It was very urgent because her car was completely done.”

Preston Vaughan, the president of Sigma Phi Epsilon, saw her need and promptly brought it up to the rest of the executive members.

“We thought about possibly trying to allocate some of the chapter’s money to do that, but then we thought a better way to do it would be fundraising,” he said. “She’s been at this house for over six years now, so many of our recent alumni had great experiences with her. We pushed it out to them and let them help out there.”

The GoFundMe is set to a goal of $5,500 with over $3,680 raised as of the time of publication.

“The quote she got was around $2,000 just for the labor. I originally set the goal at right around like $2,500, and then once we started getting a bunch of donations, we figured we’d just try and raise as much as we could,” Ayres said. “She’s been a huge help to us, so as much money as we could give her, we were going to try and give her.”

Ayres said that Snyder is “basically the house mom.”

“She cooks us meals, she talks to us to make sure we’re doing well with all school, and she’ll even get on us for cleaning up after ourselves,” Ayres said. “If we’re using bad language in the house, she’ll get on to us about that. She’s a very motherly figure, and she takes care of us all the time.”

Snyder did not respond to a request for an interview. Vaughan was also grateful for the opportunity to build relationships with the house staff.

“Coming into the fraternity and being from the other side of the country, I didn’t really know entirely what to expect, but I definitely didn’t expect to create some of these relationships,” Vaughan said. “I’m glad that being a member of Sig Ep has highlighted that, and I’ve been able to form these relationships.”

The fraternity’s mantra is “Building Balanced Men,” with a focus on the principles of virtue, diligence and brotherly love.

“As a fraternity, we care about each and every person that’s involved in this fraternity,” Vaughan said. “Even though they aren’t necessarily a brother, they still mean a tremendous amount to us, so we’re gonna work to give back to them as much as they’ve given to us.”

Snyder did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
