A south suburban community is reeling after four people, including three children, died in a house fire early Wednesday morning.
According to officials in Crete, the blaze broke out just before 1 a.m. in a home on Chalet Court, with firefighters arriving at the scene within minutes.
The intense fire in the one-story home drove firefighters into defensive positions, and they were able to bring the blaze under control within 40 minutes, officials said.
When they entered the home, firefighters found four individuals inside, all of whom were pronounced dead.
No cause of death was immediately given, and the Illinois State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
Officials confirmed three of the victims were students. Two of them attended Monee Elementary and one attended Crete-Monee High School, according to the school district.
“This is a devastating time for our school community,” Superintendent Dr. Kara Coglianese said in a letter. “We are all grieving together, and we will do everything we can to support our students, staff and families in the days ahead.”
Counselors, social workers and other support staff will be made available at the school beginning Wednesday, officials said.
