UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday appointedveteran French diplomat Jean Arnault as his personal envoy to support effortsto end the conflict in the Middle East, warning that the world faces the riskof a broader war.
Speaking to reporters in the UN headquarters in New York,Guterres said he is in close contact with multiple parties in the region andglobally, noting that several initiatives aimed at dialogue and peace arecurrently underway.
He stressed the need for these efforts to succeed, notingthat any prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz would disrupt the flow ofoil, gas, and fertilizers at a critical point in the global agriculturalseason. “At this moment, it is time to stop escalation and startdiplomacy,” Guterres said, adding that UN mediators have offered theirservices, and that Arnault will do “everything possible” to support peaceefforts.
